Art History/Classics Library

The Art History/Classics Library supports research for students and faculty in the departments of History of Art, Art Practice, Classics, and Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology. The library is home to the Fine Arts Collection, with hundreds of thousands of volumes, and the Classics Collection, which covers all aspects of ancient Greco-Roman civilization. Access policy

The Art History/Classics Library houses core collections for scholarly research. Monographs are available for two-hour loan, although much of the collection is noncirculating, including periodicals. This core collection is complemented by the comprehensive fine arts and classics collections housed in the Main (Gardner) Stacks, Doe Library. 

  • UC Berkeley graduate students, faculty, and staff are granted automatic access with borrowing privileges.
  • UC Berkeley undergraduate students in need of materials located in the Art History/Classics Library may use materials on-site, but may not borrow. Undergraduates may not use the library for study hall purposes.

Access may be granted to nonaffiliated patrons in need of materials located in the library. Visiting patrons will be required to sign in for a Day Pass, providing their name, address, and specific item needed.

All other special requests for access should be directed to the art librarian for art history-related research, and the classics librarian for classics-related research.

We request that all patrons be prepared to show appropriate ID when requested by staff.

Loan policy

Borrowing privileges are restricted to Berkeley faculty, graduate students, and staff. Please see our access policy for details.

Lending periods vary by type of material: 

  • Monographs: 2 hours* or library use only
  • Journals: Library use only
  • Reference: Library use only
  • Reserves: 2 hours* or library use only
  • CDs and DVDs: 1 day or library use only 
  • Special collections: Library use only

*2-hour loans are nonrenewable.

Returning books

All materials must be returned to the Art History/Classics Circulation Desk.

Overdue materials

Patrons may be fined and/or billed, and accounts blocked for overdue and/or nonreturned materials.

Special collections

Special collection items are noncirculating and may be used in the Art History/Classics Library only. Request these items at the Art History/Classics circulation desk, or email Please allow up to 48 hours for paging of special collection materials.

To request an Art History/Classics item housed in the Art History/Classics Cage or at the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF), please contact Art History/Classics Library staff:

Materials housed in the Art History/Classics Cage will generally be available 24 hours or less after the request has been submitted. Materials housed at NRLF will generally be available 24 to 48 hours or less after the request has been submitted.

Art History/Classics materials housed in the Art History/Classics Cage or NRLF may be viewed in the Art History/Classics Library only, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., by appointment.
