Council of the Gods (Der Rat der Gotter) (East Germany, 1950)

Directed by Kurt Maetzig. Cast: Paul Bildt, Fritz Tillmann, Willi A. Kleinau, Hans-Georg Rudolph, Albert Garbe, Helmuth Hinzelmann, Inge Keller, Yvonne Merin, Kate Scharf. A film based on the Nuremberg Trials against the directors of the IG Farben Company which proved the joint guilt of German industry in fascism and war, and the close ties between big industry and the Nazis. Two main protagonists dominate this epic. Chairman Mauch, who had supported Hitler, finds new fame and fortune in West Germany after the war, while the bourgeois chemist Dr.

Desire Under the Elms (1959)

Eben waits for the day he will inherit the land from his tyrannical, widowed father. Eben's father takes a new wife and says he'll leave the farm to her. Die Geschichte vom kleinen Muck (The Story of Little Mook) (East Germany, 1953)

Directed by Wolfgang Staudte. Cast: Thomas Schmidt, Johannes Maus, Friedrich Richter, Trude Hesterberg, Alwin Lippisch, Silja Lesny, Charles Hans Voigt, Werner Peters, Gerhard Hansel. A little boy, Muck, is banished from his home but meets a wondrous old woman who gives him magic racing slippers and a wand with which to hunt up hidden treasures. Convinced that he has found his fortune, Muck sets out for the Sultan's court where he is soon made the chief bursar. But Muck's career evokes much envy among the courtiers, so with a bit of magic, he has their heads fitted with donkey's ears.

Giant (1956)

Directed by George Stevens. Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Chill Wills, Mercedes McCambridge, Sal Mineo, Dennis Hopper, Judith Evelyn, Paul Fix. Bick Benedict, his society-gilded wife and three generations of land-rich Texas sons and daughters love, swagger, connive and clash in a monumental drama of family strife, racial bigotry and conflict between cattle barons and newly-rich oil tycoons. A major subplot concerns the racism against Mexican Americans in Texas.

Hare-abian Nights (1959)

Animated short. Directed by Ken Harris. Intending to go to Perth Amboy, Bugs misses a left turn at Des Moines and tunnels into an audition at the Sultan's palace. The Sultan (who looks just like Yosemite Sam) has a crocodile pit ready to receive the talent he rejects. The Timbuc Three Plus 2, a Dixieland quintet, gets dropped, as does an Elvis Presley clone (singing "You ain't nothing but a hound camel"). To save his fur, Bugs offers a trio of tall tales. The last, involving his triumph over Yosemite Sam, displeases the Sultan greatly.

I Am a Camera (1955)

Directed by Henry Cornelius. Cast: Julie Harris, Laurence Harvey, Shelley Winters. Into a struggling writer's life comes a madcap chanteuse whose decadent lifestyle and zest for living effects everyone around her. The film takes place in the pre-Nazi Berlin of the early 1930s. Based on the novel "Berlin stories" by Christopher Isherwood and the play by John Van Druten. 95 min. I am Not Your Negro (2016)

Directed by Raoul Peck. Using James Baldwin's unfinished final manuscript, Remember This House, this documentary follows the lives and successive assassinations of three of the author's friends, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., delving into the legacy of these iconic figures and narrating historic events using Baldwin's original words and a flood of rich archival material.

Imitation of Life (1959)

Based on Fannie Hurst's novel. Directed by Douglas Sirk. Cast: Lana Turner (Lora Meredith), John Gavin (Steve Archer).
