Announcements

All future meetings of BTECHGRP will be held in 303 Doe. This will be

"Technical Services Council" (formerly PSAG-TS)

Agenda

New Binding Allocations and LC Marking - Gary Quien

Due to budget restrictions the policy of "binding all monographs on
receipt" could not be maintained. It had been previously possible due to
supplemental funding. Thus, the "Binding Task Force" made 4
recommendations to CAG to deal with this problem that resulted in the
implementation of the following new policies for the 1999/2000 fiscal
year.

Monographs that cannot stand by themselves on a shelf will
continue to be bound on receipt.

Material that is in need of repair can continue to be sent to
Conservation without counting against your quota.

Regarding serial binding:
Allocations will be maintained at the present level except
for certain libraries which have been in need of bigger binding quotas
(e.g.: BIOS). LC binds will be stamped horizontally. Even though it is
more costly, it will make it easier for patrons to read call numbers. LC
binds will now cost $1.00 less than Buck binds.

Monographs will no longer be bound on receipt (except for the
above mentioned exception regarding pambinds) Instead library monograph
binding allocations will increase and bound material will be purchased
rather than paperbacks when the cost of the bound book is equal to that of
binding the paperback.

Questions and Answers:

In the course of an open question and answer session Gary clarified
the following issues:

BPD will not be counting binding quotas for each library. Each
library will be responsible for keeping track of their monthly binding
allocation. What is important is that each library approximates their
binding budget as much as possible.

The written binding policies for this fiscal year are posted on
the web in the July 8th issue of CU News

PROMPT CAT/OCLC Problems - Tonette Mendoza

Tonette Mendoza (Tech Svcs / Database Maintenance Unit) discovered
through a review of GLADIS records that some records had been corrupted
(some had incorrect OCLC numbers, others had duplicate numbers) She
contacted the Systems Office to get the dates in which this data
corruption occurred and had the corrupted records printed. She
then had her students review these records to verify which records
were the correct ones.

The Systems Office confirmed that the problem has been resolved but
we should still keep an eye open for any more "corrupted" records. She
recommends everyone to inform her of any"abnormal" records we encounter
so she can report them to Systems.

INNOPAC Labels - Pam Daniels

Pam Daniels announced that the final draft on "INNOPAC Label
Placement Procedures" would be submitted to the Technical Services Council
for approval. Once approved it will be posted in the BPM online for people
to refer to. Pam Daniels presented the group with a label remover product called
"Goo Gone" that can remove INNOPAC label from journals without damage.
This product could be the final solution for any misplaced INNOPAC labels
placed on serial items that are received from central technical processing
units. Each bottle of the solution costs @$2.00. Since the majority of the
BTECHGRP members want to obtain this product, Pam will ask Bill Brockett /
Business Services to order a supply for check-in staff.

Future of BTECHGRP - Pam Daniels Pam Daniels would like to use
BTECHGRP meetings to discuss public service issues and new training for
technical service units.

She would like to receive feedback on topics to cover from the
members. Please e-mail Pam Daniels with any suggestions for future
agendas.

Open Discussion

Documentation on the proper withdrawal of material with CARS
bills attached to them has not been finalized and is still under
consideration.

Tonette Mendoza announced that because she is still working 2
days per week at NRLF, the DATMAIN account responses have been delayed
(the Prompt Cat-OCLC problem also contributed to this current delay).
