BTECH minutes - 10/6/99

BERKELEY TECHNICAL SERVICES DISCUSSION GROUP
MEETING MINUTES

October 6, 1999
Recorder: Pamela Daniels
Guests: Ginny Moon, Gary Quien

Agenda

NRLF Inventory Records on GLADIS (n-level "bibliographic" records) -
Ginny Moon

Ginny Moon reviewed the handout on NRLF Inventory Records on GLADIS
in detail. Since NRLF's database loaded

to GLADIS, there has been a number of questions about NRLF's
inventory records, referred to by many staff members, as "n-level
records." Most of the staff have encountered the non-UCB n-level records
in GLADIS. This handout explains the history of the NRLF databases, the
construction of NRLF records, the 2 distinct types of NRLF records on
GLADIS, ongoing projects to upgrade or update existing NRLF records
and gives examples of different ways to view NRLF records, including how
to view the full NRLF record.

Questions and Answers:

In the course of an open question and answer session, Ginny clarified
the following issues:

When the record displays in the NRLF, the values for circulation
status "ccat" are as follows:

L= limited: non-circulating / can be used in NRLF, owning
library can access

R= restricted: can only be seen at owning library (e.g.,
Bancroft special collections)

NRLF does not change circulation codes. Errors should be
reported toPenny Betrang/Systems.

III/LARS Interface Update - Gary Quien

A workgroup was formed and convened at UCSD in 1997 to develop a
system, now known as III/LARS, that would transmit binding data directly
from INNOPAC to the computer at the Bindery. This system aims to save
costs by enabling libraries to share specific binding data with the
Bindery, which will enable the Bindery to more easily setup spine-stamping
information.

The workgroup, in designing the system, attempted to integrate the
INNOPAC and LARS functions without adding to the work involved in
producing material for binding. Gary informed the BTECHGRP members that
the Bindery will still need binding slips in addition to the electronic
LARS file.

Last month, Lee Leighton asked Armanda Barone, Sherry Brown, Pam
Daniels, Judy Walker, Judith Weeks, and Gary Quien, to attend last month's
Technical Services Council to discuss the LARS/INNOPAC Interface
Implementation.

Armanda, as the primary contact person for UC Berkeley, outlined the
new interface implementation.

Although the LARS/INNOPAC interface is complete, there is no
documentation or formal training plans. The goal is to have all INNOPAC
campuses on line by the end of January 2000. David Martinelli, Manager of
the UC Library Binderies will contact each campus several weeks prior to
implementation to discuss details and establish protocols. Sherry Brown
and Judith Weeks have volunteered to do the beta-testing.

Gary informed BTECHGRP that Berkeley will be the last campus on the
testing schedule. It's important to keep in mind that the testing period
will allow time for any changes and improvements to be programmed into the
system as it's "customized" for each campus.

Concerns were expressed regarding training issues, setting up
procedures, and transmitting the files via PCs vs Wyse terminals. An email
reflector has been created for LARS/III related issues. Armanda will email
the Technical Services Council, BTECHGRP, and the Binding reflector
requesting names to be added to the LARS/III reflector. Until then, any
questions or concerns can be directed to Armanda Barone.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 am.
