1. Announcements/Questions
-
Sarah Harrington discussed questions around unemployment she has received from students and wonders how supervisors are handling such questions.
-
While students do receive up to 128 hours of admin leave, they are likely to run out of hours now that the shelter-in-place has been extended. At what point will they be eligible for unemployment?
-
HR may be able to provide some information about this, but students are best directed to the CA Employment Development Department for more information:
If your employer has reduced your hours or shut down operations due to COVID-19, you can file an Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim. UI provides partial wage replacement benefit payments to workers who lose their job or have their hours reduced, through no fault of their own. If you are temporarily unemployed due to COVID-19 and expected to return to work with your employer within a few weeks, you are not required to actively seek work each week. However, you must remain able and available and ready to work during your unemployment for each week of benefits you claim and meet all other eligibility criteria. If you're eligible, benefits can range from $40-$450 per week.
2. PSC Followup : Patron responses and communications regarding closures and remote resources.
-
Jen Osgood informed the group that Morrison Library has received questions about returning items to the Graphic Arts Loan Collection. Patrons with an item on loan were sent an email letting them know that due dates were extended through mid-July (originally April 22). In special cases where students need to return an item sooner (e.g. international students), they should reach out to Jen and Scott to arrange returning the material to Doe.
-
Jenna Jackson let the group know that patrons are being advised to return items only when the libraries have reopened. This includes return by mail. Please advise patrons to email the Privileges desk if there are extenuating circumstances requiring that that they return materials before libraries reopen.
-
Kristen Van Vliet noted that other UCs will do courtesy returns if students have already left the bay area; however, items will not be checked in from the patron's account until the libraries reopen.
-
At this time it is unclear whether overdue charges will be cleared for items returned via mail or ILL due to COVID-19 closures.
-
Additional notes regarding library privileges:
-
No exceptions are being made to allow remote resource access for ineligible patrons (community members, etc.)
-
Mark and Beth are discussing possible remote library card renewals for patrons who are eligible for remote access (e.g. UC Extension). If patrons have questions regarding account renewals, please refer to Privileges. Jenna will inform patrons when/if this remote service becomes available.
-
Kristen Van Vliet informed the group that InterLibrary Loan is still operating and trying to fulfill as many article and e-book requests as possible.
-
Angela Arnold asks whether books lost due to circumstances caused by COVID-19 may be forgiven. What should inquiring patrons be told?
-
At this time there is no definitive response to how these particular cases will be handled. Precedent suggests that the library will not forgive replacement costs.
3. Alternate opportunities for working from home, general discussion.

4. Other topics for Discussion
-
Jenifer Carter asked how supervisors are connecting with student employees to stay connected and/or celebrate graduating seniors. Ideas for staying connected with staff during this time?
-
Michele Buchman mentioned the LHS Division is putting together a poster (as they would normally do in the office) to thank students for their work.
-
Peter Soriano discussed the ACRL webinar on managing people remotely. During the webinar, they suggested setting up short zoom meetings with students to connect and see how people are doing.
-
Angela Arnold suggested Marco Polo to record greetings to students, could be useful for messages to celebrate graduating seniors.
-
Jenny Schuelke suggested virtual cards: https://www.groupgreeting.com/
-
Vaughn Egge suggested using Google Rooms for informal group chats.
-
Has anyone been to Jeff MacKie-Mason office hours?
-
Blake went and said that while there weren't specifics regarding closure timelines, it was a good opportunity to provide feedback for what library administration could work on. It's easy to drop in and get your questions answered without needing to stay for the whole hour.
