BERKELEY TECHNICAL SERVICES DISCUSSION GROUP
MEETING MINUTES

Wednesday, September 4, 2002
Recorder: Lisa Sanchez
9:00am to 11:00am
303 Doe Library

Announcements:

Don Lee reported that many of the Nijhoff/Couts problem titles seem to
have started coming addressed to the Order Division. He is working on
getting these addresses corrected so that they will be received in their
proper location.

Tim Dennis reported that the new Research, Reference and Collections unit
has a new staff member. Glenn Gillespie is their new Technical services
person. He is taking over Tims old responsibilities for the unit.

Agenda:

BPM final discussion before permanent posting/Judith Weeks, Jon Solomon

The B-Tech group has had the last month to use and critique
the new BPM posted on its temporary location. Jon mentioned that most of the
comments he received were on how great the new BPM was, with some comments
on typos, etc. We asked the group if they felt we could safely replace
the old BPM with the new BPM and everyone agreed it was fine to go
ahead with the switch. One concern that did pop up was
the loss of the search engine for the site. Jon reported that he cannot
add the search feature to the site until it was in its permanent location.
Jon has just a few more little things to do to the BPM before he actually
posts it. After replacing the BPM, he will send an email out to ALLUSERS
to let everyone know of the new BPM in its permanent location. Once
posted, Jon can work on adding a search page and tagging the needed
locations to make the search feature work.

Revising the BPM, brain storming/Judith Weeks

Back in early 2000 Pam Daniels organized a large group of
people to update and revise the BPM. This proved to be a huge
undertaking. Consequently only those sections that clearly needed major
updating and rewriting were actually rewritten and updated. These
included the sections on Serials Checkin, Serials Claiming, Library
Binding Manual, Innopac Manual, Ordering new materials and a new section
on Conservation Treatment. It was decided to wait to update the rest of
the sections until the new sections were posted in a new updated website.
Well, time passed and only now is the new BPM online finished thanks to
the efforts of Jon Solomon. It is now time to start thinking about
updating and revising of the older sections of the BPM and include new
sections not represented. It was suggested that we form an AD-HOC group
of people just to review the BPM and figure out which sections need
only minor corrections, which need major rewriting and determine what new
sections can be added. Several people volunteered to be on the AD-HOC
group but Judith will send out a formal request for volunteers to B-TECH
to reach people who were not present, but may want to help. This topic
will be brought up at a future B-Tech meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 am
