[Salgado, Sebastiao] The Spectre of Hope

Noted Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado and art critic John Berger pore over Salgado's photographic collection "Migrations," six years and 43 countries in the making (ranging across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America). "Migrations" contains photographs of people pushed from their homes and traditions to cities and their margins -- slums and refugee camps.

Examines the role of caxiri, a native beer, in the social and cultural life of the Waiapi Indians of Brazil. An important part of Waiapi life, caxiri is imbibed daily by men, women and children. This documentary describes the preparation of caxiri, as well as its use in community festivals and celebrations. 1988. 39 min.
