Kansas City (1995)

Directed by Robert Altman. Cast: Jennifer Jason Leigh, Miranda Richardson, Harry Belafonte, Michael Murphy, Dermot Mulroney, Steve Buscemi, Brooke Smith. Set in 1934 Kansas City, a telegraph operator named Blondie kidnaps Carolyn Stilton, wife of a powerful businessman who commutes to Washington to advise President Roosevelt. Blondie figures she can use Carolyn to gain safe passage for her husband Johnny who is in the grip of the city's top gangster, a club owner named Seldom Seen. The movie unfolds in the dark streets of the downtown Kansas City night. 116 min.

Korczak (Poland / Germany / UK, 1990)

Directed by Andrzej Wajda. Cast: Wojtek Pszoniak, Ewa Dalkowska. Tells the true story of Janusz Korczak, a renowned physician and author, who ran a home for Jewish orphans in 1930's Warsaw. Urged by friends to flee the country, he chose to remain with his orphans, but as the war continued it became plain that, depite Krczak's tireless efforts, the children would be deported to concentration camps. 118 min. La Ciudad (The City) (1998)

Directed by David Riker. Filmed through intensive collaboration with the New York Latino immigrant community over a five-year period, La Ciudad tells four stories about recently arrived illegal immigrants from Mexico and Latin America to New York City weaving a rich narrative tapestry of present day immigrant life.

La Tregua (The Truce) (Italy / France / Germany / Switzerland, 1996)

Directed by Francesco Rosi. Cast: John Turturro, Rade Serbedzija, Massimo Ghini, Teco Celio, Roberto Citran, Claudio Bisio, Andy Luotto, Agnieszka Wagner and Stefano Dionisi. Tells the true story of humanist Primo Levi and other Italian prisoners liberated from Auschwitz after WWII as they embark on a thousand-mile journey back home to Italy. Along the way, they face great odds but as Primo travels he rediscovers the simply joys of life that the war threatened to destroy forever -- friendship, love, laughter, and most of important of all, a sense of hope. 118 min.

Liberty Heights (1999)

Directed by Barry Levinson. Cast: Adrien Brody, Bebe Neuwirth, Joe Mantegna. The year is 1954, a season of dramatic social flux that Levinson explores through the eyes of a Jewish family, the Kurtzmans in this warmly funny, semi-autobiographical tale. Friendship, romance, rock 'n' roll, courage, racism, cadilacs, halloween (should a nice Jewish boy dress up as Hitler?): the times are indeed changing. The Kurtzmans - and America - will never be the same.

Livin' Large (1991)
