Ansatsu (1964)

Director: Masahiro Shinoda. Cast: Tetsuro Tamba, Shima Iwashita, Eiji Okada, Isao Kimura, Tamotsu Hayakawa, Eitaro Ozawa, Fujio Suga, Hideo Kidokoro, Gen Shimizu, Yoshindo Yamaji, Hiroshi Aoyama, Keiji Sada. 1853: "Four black ships" - the foreign steamboats of Commander Matthew Perry - anchored at Edo Bay, sparking civil unrest and the major political manoeuvering that saw the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. At a time when assassination had become a disturbing political tool, the film follows Hachiro Kiyokawa, an ambitious, masterless samurai whose allegiances drift dangerously between the Shogunate and the Emperor, as he attempts to prevent the outbreak of civil war.
