Using the Library during COVID-19

Request Materials at The Bancroft Library

The Bancroft Library is open by appointment only. For instructions on requesting appointments, please visit the Using Aeon LibGuide.


You must have an Aeon account to request materials. The Bancroft Library has integrated Aeon into our Library catalog (UC Library Search) and online finding aids on the Online Archive of California (OAC). We highly recommend searching for and paging our materials through these systems to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Material can be requested in advance of your visit, or in the Reading Room. Requests made in the Reading Room for on-site materials generally take 10-30 minutes to retrieve. Off-site “Bancroft (NRLF)” materials may take one to two weeks to arrive from the library’s storage facility. For materials requested in advance, we endeavor to prepare items by the first morning of your visit. The materials will remain available through the last day of your visit. Please check your Aeon account to confirm that the item is ready for your use before visiting our Reading Room. Email banccirc-library@berkeley.edu for any questions regarding your requests.

To ensure that we serve all researchers’ needs in a fair and timely manner, there is currently a request limit of 7 active requests per researcher. After submitting 7 requests in Aeon, you will not be able to submit additional requests until you have finished with at least one existing request. The request limit does not apply to duplication orders or permissions requests. You may save requests to submit later by choosing the “Keep for My Review” option in the Aeon request form. These requests are saved in your Aeon web account (“Requests Kept for Review”). Please see our Aeon guide for more information:

Requesting Materials

In UC Library Search, click the Special Collections Request link to request a particular item. You will be prompted to login to Aeon, where you can review, edit, and submit your request.

If you wish to request specific boxes or containers in a manuscript collection, follow the link from UC Library Search to the finding aid ("OAC Finding Aid") or search for the finding aid on the OAC. Click the "Request items" link at the top of the guide to initiate your request. You will be prompted to login to Aeon, where you can specify containers, folders, or items and then submit your request.

Placing Materials on Hold

If you are not finished consulting your requested material at the end of the day, you must ask the Circulation staff to place your material on a one-week hold and amend your Aeon request. Your hold may be extended as long as material is actively in use. You may send a request for extension to banccirc-library@berkeley.edu or by calling the Reference Desk.
