DPG: RWB report on Sproul Plaza protest

Flyer with typewritten text on pink paper.

The university’s Monitor Program, chaired by Assistant Chancellor John Cummins, was formed to oversee and surveil student demonstrations. Staff members serving as monitors were tasked with attending protests, communicating with student leaders, negotiating on behalf of the university, and delivering daily reports, which were purported to be neutral, to administrators.

RWB reports:

  • rally on Sproul Plaza reached maybe 1,000 at maximum
  • Mario Savio was there and spoke but was ineffective
  • the number is down to around 200 now
  • did not seem to pick up momentum
  • some announcements were made and passed around that there would be a sit-in or camp-out again on Sproul steps
  • if this occurs, there will be a repeat of last night and arrests will be made around 5:30 am.
  • campus administration seems fairly relaxed and no need for special meeting with RWB or you is needed
  • everything sounds relatively good.
