Longshoreman say smash apartheid

Three men hold up long horizontal banner resting on wooden poles in the middle of street blocking entrance to gate of maritime port.

In 1984, members of International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Locals 10 and 34 refused to unload South African cargo at San Francisco’s Pier 80. This motivated other anti-apartheid activism in the Bay Area and energized UC Berkeley students to escalate divestment protests in 1985. Union members would later join with students, demonstrating the power of collective action against apartheid.
