Apartheid crimes against humanity poster

Poster with bolded black block letters at top and bottom. In center is an illustration of a Black man in overalls holding a young Black child who is bleeding from his mouth.

This image depicts Hector Pieterson, a South African schoolboy killed during the Soweto Uprising. In 1976, thousands of Black high school students formed the Soweto Students’ Representative Council (SSRC) and marched peacefully to protest the Afrikaans Medium Decree. This new policy mandated Afrikaans—a language often associated with the oppressor—as a language of instruction in Black schools. Police responded with tear gas and gunfire, killing at least 176 children.
