TAKE A STAND AGAINST RACISM! LEARN ABOUT APARTHEID
Shanties symbolize the poverty of black South Africans under Apartheid.
But they symbolize a lot more. Shantytowns like Crossroads in South Africa were built by blacks defying relocation to the Bantustans (homelands). Though the police and army continually attempt to destroy them, they remain. The University of California has $2.4 billion invested in South Africa. Protesting this immorality, Berkeley students and community members built a shantytown in front of the University administration building; we named the shantytown after Crossroads.
Police have twice destroyed Crossroads Berkeley. Like the people in South Africa, we resisted. In solidarity with the people of South Africa, we will rebuild.
We encourage you to build shanties on your campus, in your community, and to bring them to UC Berkeley on April 29, Tuesday in support and participation of the protest against Apartheid everywhere.
