UC Berkeley researchers are losing direct access to 11 digital resources. Here’s how to keep using them.

The UC Berkeley Library is losing direct access to 11 digital resources amid budget cuts across the University of California system. But students and scholars will still be able to access the materials in alternative ways.

The decision to cancel a limited number of the UC Libraries’ systemwide subscriptions was made after a careful data-driven review of shared agreements and usage. The reduction strategy, coordinated by UC’s Council of University Librarians, aims to preserve the majority of UC’s shared licensed content while sustaining the university’s academic mission during this time of budgetary uncertainty. Despite these cancellations — spurred by a 3.7 percent reduction to the systemwide collections budget — the UC Libraries continue to invest approximately $61 million annually in shared digital and licensed resources.

The subscription cancellations affect libraries throughout the UC system. The UC Berkeley Library has made a strong commitment to protect its collections budget and will not see any reductions to Berkeley-funded resources in the current fiscal year.
