Then there's Ted Nugent who, along with his various hunting and weapons enthusiast offerings, had a dramatic role in a Miami Vice episode and appeared as himself in an episode of That '70s Show.

And Ahmet Zappa (less established as a musician than brother Dweezil, but still qualifies) had a limited recurring role in one season of Roseanne. He played Mark's roomate whose stereo and video set-up tempted Dan to move in with the boys.

Joe Strummer (Clash) appeared in several films including dramatic roles in Walker, Straight to Hell (along with Grace Jones and Elvis Costello), Candy Mountain, and The King of Comedy.

All of the Sex Pistols appear in Malcolm McLaren's mockumentary The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.

George Clinton appeared in an episode of How I Met Your Mother and the films PCU and House Party, plus various cameos and an appearance in a video game or two.

Bootsy Collins also appears in PCU and in an episode of Everybody Hates Chris, plus various other mostly cameo roles.

Also, several musicians appeared in AbFab over the years, including Debby Harry, Minnie Driver, Elton John, Rufus Wainsright, and Suzy Quatro.

And David Johansen (NY Dolls, Buster Poindexter) appeared in films (an HBO version of Oz, Scrooged, Car 54 Where Are You?) and an obscure (at least to me) television series titled The Adventures of Pete & Pete plus a few other roles.

Several reggae musicians also appear in Club Paradise, The Harder They Come, and Rockers, but I'm guessing most of them are a little obscure for the list. Among the more significant (and close to mainstream...): Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Dillinger, Jacob Miller, and Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace all have roles in Rockers, most playing themselves.

It seems like there are others but this pesky cataloging on my desk is interfering with my reminiscing. My all-time favorite musician-in-a-movie-role is probably the scene in Rude Boy in which Mick Jones (Clash, Big Audio Dynamite) is at pains to explain to a rock journalist that the Clash really don't like for their fans to spit at or on them.

Now I'll stop.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
