2015 Election

The Nominations and Elections Committee has received nominations and identified candidates willing to run in the upcoming LAUC-B election. The positions open this year include Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, two Library Representatives, and an Affiliated Representative.

Candidates will be announced at the Joint LAUC-B and LAUC-B Affiliated Spring Assembly on Tuesday, April 21, and further nominations will be sought from the floor during that meeting.

The ballot will also include a proposed bylaws change to provide for a shorter period of time between presenting a slate of candidates for LAUC-B offices and the election.  The use of electronic ballots allows for greater flexibility in scheduling the assemblies and elections.

Voting will again be through an online ballot for both LAUC-B and LAUC statewide elections. Candidate statements will be available on the LAUC-B website. The online polls will be open from May 18 until June 1. Online ballots will be due by the close of election day, June 1.

Committee activities:

1. Academic Review: A Program for LAUC-B Members

October 28, 2014, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m

Children’s Literature Room, Education Psychology Library

The Committee hosted the annual Academic Review Program for LAUC-B members. Representatives from the Library Human Resources Department, Academic Personnel Office, CAPA as well as Tom Leonard, the University Librarian, were on hand to offer their perspectives on the review process and what reviewers look for in a dossier. A question and answer period followed the presentation. Roughly 50 people attended and the consensus was that the program was very helpful, especially for those pursuing reviews in this cycle.

2. Professional Development Spring Event: Dean AnnaLee Saxenian (iSchool) and Patty Frontiera (D-Lab)

April 2, 2015, 8:30 - 10:00 a.m

Morrison Library

The Committee planned and hosted an event with speakers AnnaLee (Anno) Saxenian, Dean of the School of Information, and Patty Frontiera, academic coordinator for the Social Sciences Data Lab, or D-Lab. Dean Saxenian spoke on the changing role of information and research, and discussed the new skill sets needed by information professionals and how the iSchool is preparing its students. She also encouraged a more collaborative relationship between the iSchool and Library, including courses for staff. Patty Frontiera spoke about D-Lab resources, and the types of courses available to staff. She also spoke about the possibilities for collaboration, and the ways in which librarians are already involved in D-Lab courses. The event was informative and there were more than 40 attendees.

V. Committee on Diversity

Recent activities of the LAUC-B Committee on Diversity include:

In December 2014, the Staff Mentorship Program was revived by the Committee on Diversity. By January, we had several librarian mentors and staff mentees matched, and these folks have all met and continue to meet. More librarians and staff have signed up in recent months. An online evaluation survey will be sent to participants later this year.

On March 3, 2015, the Committee on Diversity teamed with the Staff Development Committee for a very successful and well-attended event featuring Sandy Hirsch, Director of San José State University’s School of Information. She presented on the employment landscape for MLIS holders, and how SJSU’s I School can help with career development. Most of the attendees were non-librarian staff.

On April 22 – the day after this Assembly – we are sponsoring another brown bag, this time featuring a panel of three recently hired librarians, moderated by Committee on Diversity member L. Pendse. They will share information on projects they are working on. Because many of our paths don’t regularly cross, it is hoped that this forum will lead to LAUC-B members learning about interesting work being done by their colleagues.

Earlier this month, the LAUC-B Committee on Diversity Co-Chairs prepared an update of our activities for LAUC Statewide.

In the coming months, the Committee on Diversity will tackle additional tasks in the recently revised charge.

Respectfully submitted,

LAUC-B Committee on Diversity:

  • Lori Hines (Co-Chair)
  • Liladhar Pendse
  • Jane Rosario ex officio (LAUC Statewide Committee on Diversity)
  • Virginia Shih
  • Michael Sholinbeck (Co-Chair)
