The Library Instructor Development Program (IDP) is designed to help library instructors improve our teaching skills. Our plan is to provide many different means to do so: formal presentations, ideas you can try on your own, readings, videos, discussions, sharing knowledge within our community of practice 1 and more.
A second goal is to raise the profile and increase recognition of staff who do instruction. Each event will provide an opportunity for individuals to reflect on their own learning, which could ultimately coalesce into a teaching journal or portfolio: evidence of one's growth as a teacher. Whether you prefer to learn in a group or individually, face-to-face or online, IDP will offer resources you can use to become a more effective, confident and creative instructor.
Participate in our community of practice to improve your own teaching practice. We invite you to meet with your teaching colleagues at IDP events and online to learn from and support each other in our shared endeavor. The only requirements are your desire to contribute and a willingness to trust your colleagues. You need not participate in every session, but you should be willing to make time for most of our group events. We hope what you get out of them will inspire you to continue.
Each semester we will choose a different theme for events and resources.
Events are open to all staff, and will be publicized through the instruct@lists listserv. If you wish to receive emails about IDP events, send a message to Beth Dupuis to be added to the instruct listserv.

Instructors in the Library already have a community of practice. Every time you share a problem with a colleague, ask how she handles it, or recommend a new teaching strategy or tip to a friend, you are participating in that community.
