The Planning Process: Engaging Students

Quite simply, Cal students are our most important constituents: Improving their learning environment is the very purpose of the Moffitt Library renovation. Engaging and listening to students have been central to our planning efforts, and we will continue to seek student input as we refine plans for spaces, programs and services. Below, a chronology of important events, conversations and assessment activities involving students.

2008

  • Renovation project leadership holds first focus group session with members of Student Advisory Council for Undergraduate Education
  • Discussion of student interest in a 24-hour study space in Moffitt held with ASUC senator
  • Survey of 200+ student library employees conducted

2009

  • Campus IST shares results of student survey on campus computing labs
  • Student representatives William Smelko (ASUC president) and Tara Raffi (ASUC senator) join Provost-appointed Moffitt Program Advisory Committee
  • Two Lower Sproul program planning workshops held with students; renovation project leadership in attendance
  • Student panel meets for Q&A with Campaign Working Group
  • Second focus group session with members of Student Advisory Council for Undergraduate Education
  • Launch of Moffitt Comment Wall (April-May) to gather student input on a series of topics related to the renovation
  • ASUC representatives Smelko and Raffi participate in 2nd and 3rd meetings of Provost-appointed Moffitt Program Advisory Committee
  • Renovation project leadership meets individually with ASUC representatives Smelko and Raffi
  • Meetings with student coordinators of Building Sustainability @ Cal course and Judy Chess of Capital Projects to explore Moffitt as a student project for fall
  • Focus group session with members of the Disabled Students Union
  • Building Sustainability @ Cal students conduct waste, water & energy audits during fall semester, culminating in Dec. 2009 recommendations for building improvements.

2010

  • Meetings with Building Sustainability @ Cal interns and program coordinators for discussion of Spring 2010 Moffitt class project
  • Architect-sponsored comment board in Moffitt lobby to gather student input
  • Architect-led furniture planning workshop with students representatives
  • Third focus group with the Student Advisory Council on Undergraduate Education
  • Building Sustainability @ Cal interns lead workshop for library staff to discuss results of department waste audits
  • Building Sustainability @ Cal interns submit summary report of FSM Cafe waste audits
  • Moffitt renovation orientation and Q&A with ASUC senators elected for 2010-2011 term
  • Moffitt renovation orientation and Q&A with newly elected ASUC Academic Affairs VP, Viola Tang
  • ASUC-sponsors forum on Moffitt renovation
  • Planning meeting with ASUC members Viola Tang and Mark Rogers on fundraising activities
  • Building Sustainability @ Cal course field project ("What Do You Want from the Renovation?") completed and posted on YouTube at end of spring semester
