''March 3, 2009 - Early Bird OPAC Design Group update:''

'''Our charge comes from the ILS Advisory Group and includes the following guidelines for the OPAC:'''

* Keep it simple - the public interface should be designed for the "casual user," as opposed to the research user.
* Feature high impact, added-value services unique to the OskiCat.
* Refer users to other systems that may be better suited to their needs.

'''What did we do first?'''

A comparative analysis of comparative analysis of five library catalog systems (OskiCat, Melvyl, NGM, Pathfinder, GLADIS) and two information-finding tools commonly used by Berkeley students and faculty (Google, Amazon) to determine those services that are unique to OskiCat. According to our analysis, those services are:

*Renewing items
*Finding course reserves
*Limiting to available items
*Limiting to a particular library on campus
*Viewing status of individual volumes and journal issues

Next, to help us understand our users and their needs, we developed profiles of typical users and scenarios for how they would use the catalog. We are also conducting a user survey targeted towards novice users and undergraduates.

In addition, we have reviewed the OPAC-related needs that staff identified as part of the needs assessment sessions at the beginning of the project.

We have also looked at usability data from other libraries, and a number of catalog interfaces at other libraries using Innovative systems - both within the UC system and other institutions.

'''What's happening now?'''

We're working within the parameters of the system to customize the interface.

'''What will happen next?'''

*Our proposed design will be reviewed by both the ILS implementation team and the Advisory Group
*We'll make adjustments to the design based on their feedback

'''When will staff get to see OskiCat?'''

OskiCat will debut at a staff Early Bird in early May.

'''What if there are problems or I have suggestions after that?'''

There will be ongoing review of our catalog after release, including usability testing and gathering staff and user comments. A process will be in place for making changes and improvements as we all become more familiar with our new system.\\

The ILS Advisory Group endorses the proposed user-centered design process for developing the OskiCat public and staff interfaces. We are providing the following guidance for their development.

'''Public Interface'''\\
Please incorporate the following principle into the public OPAC interface design.

->'''1. Keep it simple'''
The public interface should be designed for the "casual user," as opposed to the research user. It should provide search options for high-impact (e.g., heavily used) indexes (see Pathfinder stats). We do expect that there will be an advanced search screen that is more sophisticated than a basic search screen. The advanced search should still limit the number of index options, to prevent overwhelming the user with low-impact/less relevant choices.

->'''2. Feature high impact, added-value services unique to the OskiCat.'''
High impact services (e.g., inventories, course reserves, limit by location) that are unique to OskiCat should be featured in high level screens.

->'''3. Refer users to other systems that may be better suited to their needs'''
Take advantage of opportunities to refer users to other systems that may be more suitable. For example, a "Find Articles" link on the basic search page could give the user more options (e.g. the ERF, Google Scholar).

'''Comparative Systems Analysis'''\\
In order to address principles 2 & 3 (above), you will need to identify high impact features and do a comparative analysis across a number of systems. This analysis dovetails with our interest in understanding the relationships between and the unique value-added by each of these systems. Your analysis should look both at high impact features and scope of content for our new ILS OPAC, Next Generation Melvyl and any other "general catalog" system that you feel should be included. We ask that you share this with us as soon as it is completed.

'''Staff Interface'''\\
The search and display needs of our staff will be much more sophisticated than those of the great majority of the public. We understand that there may be some users with comprehensive research needs that will use the staff interface. We expect that the staff interface will have many more search indexes and will display more information (e.g., processing notes). '''The only principal we offer is to keep the staff interface separate from the public interface.'''

'''Encore'''\\
Encore is Innovative Interfaces keyword search engine that provides features such as faceted browsing and social networking services. Encore is a separate product that is not integrated into the Millennium catalog. It is also only available in a subscription basis (i.e. a very high annual cost). Therefore, the Library will not be licensing Encore from Innovative.
