VPN for Windows computers - Instructions

VPN service is available to current UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff.

  • The client software runs on your off-campus computer.
  • VPN allows you to access all our licensed resources as if you were using a campus computer.
  • Some programs require VPN for off-campus use:
    Luna Insight, the java client in Berkeley Image Service, Loeb Classical Library Online, and the Connect function in EndNote.
  • VPN will work with all web browsers and most types of Internet connection, except AOL.

VPN software download and configuration problems are best handled by campus Information Services and Technology (IST):

Basic instructions

  1. Have your CalNet ID and passphrase ready.
  2. Exit all other Windows programs, and disable any antivirus software.
  3. Go to the campus Cisco VPN website.
  4. At the bottom of the page, in the Downloads section, click on Anyconnect for Windows.
  5. On the Box authorization screen, click Continue.
  6. When prompted, log in with your CalNet ID and passphrase.
  7. Double click on the AnyConnect-4.5.04029 folder

  9. Download and unzip anyconnect-win-4.5.04029-predeploy-k9.zip
  10. Double-click anyconnect-win-4.5.04029-predeploy-k9
  11. Click Run to launch the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Setup Wizard
  12. Click Next to open the End-User License Agreement. After reading the agreement, if you wish to continue with the install accept the terms of the agreement and click Next.
  13. Click Install to launch the installer. If prompted enter the credentials for an account with Local Admin rights.
  14. Click Finish to complete the install.
  15. Re-enable antivirus software.

Run VPN before using article databases, electronic journals, etc.
Always choose the Library VPN option.
Disconnect VPN when your session is finished.

Using VPN

NOTE: You will need to run VPN each time you want to use article databases, electronic journals, or other licensed library resources on your off-campus computer.

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Right-click on Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client.
  3. In the right-click menu that appears, select Send to, then Desktop (create shortcut), or Pin to Taskbar.
    That will place an icon on your computer desktop or taskbar
  4. Click on the icon.
  5. ucbvpn.berkeley.edu may already appear in the Ready to Connect window. If not, type it in.
    Click on Connect.
  6. 3-Library_VPN may already appear in the Group pull-down menu. If not, select it.
  7. In the Username box, enter your CalNet ID.
  8. In the Password box, enter your passphrase. Click on OK.
  9. After a moment, a new icon will appear in your System Tray
  10. You are now connected through VPN and can access any licensed library resources.

Disconnecting VPN

NOTE: While the VPN software is running on your computer, all your Internet traffic is routed through the UC Berkeley campus network. To reduce the load on the network, disconnect VPN when your session is finished. This will not break your Internet connection.

  1. Click on the small VPN icon.
  2. Click on Disconnect.
  3. VPN is now disconnected and you can resume normal Internet use.

NOTE: If your connection is idle for 30 minutes, VPN will "time out" automatically.
