CURRENT PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
- Reviewing, updating and expanding list of endangered core journals, and determining campus to maintain last subscription, in light of deep serials cuts now underway at most campuses
- Web page for the consortium (internal) --Collaboration on developing subject-oriented web pages for sociology (digital library)
- Update sociology collection policy statements to include internet/web and other electronic resources --Consider selection and access to electronic journals --Sociology Consortium listserv maintained at UCSD, used as chief communication method
MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Implementation of a Memorandum of Agreement regarding endangered journals in the field of sociology. Signed by CDC, April 5, 1996. Commitments have been made to retain last copy subscriptions to fifty-nine core journals.
- Input to implementation of SobAbstracts on Melvyl. This group lobbied for this database be added to Melvyl. Several members of the group served on the PAIS/SocAbstracts Database Task Force and the group as a whole provided response to issues during implementation.
- Consideration and rejection of idea to reconstitute the Consortium as a general social sciences group.
- Formalization of statement of purpose and goals.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
This group was formed in early 1993. We generally meet only once per year and conduct most of our business via email. The position of convenor rotates among the members. For the last two years (95/96 and 96/97) we have had co-convenors. The venue for the annual meeting alternates between northern and southern campuses. Some members have missed meetings due to budget constraints at the campus level. We have also tried meeting via a conference call, though this was somewhat unsatisfactory, with two members being dropped from the call due to technical difficulties.
