Lansing, Sherry L, b. July 31, 1944, Chicago, Ill. Appointed as Regent in March 1999 by Governor Davis to a term expiring in 2010. She currently serves as Vice Chairman of The Regents. Committee memberships (2000-01): Educational Policy, Health Services. Education: Ms. Lansing holds a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University. Career: Sherry Lansing is the Chair and CEO of Paramount Pictures, a position she has held since 1992. Prior to that, she headed her own production company. She has taught high school math and English in Los Angeles. She sits on the board of directors of Teach for America and the American Film Institute. She has served on the board of trustees of Scripps College, the board of Independent Colleges of Southern California, the board of the UCLA Foundation, and the executive committee of the Dean's advisory board of the UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television.

La Rue, Hugh McElroy, b. Aug. 12, 1830, Elizabethtown, Ky.; d. Dec. 12, 1906, Sacramento. Ex officio Regent as pres., State Agri. Soc., 1882; as speaker of the assembly, 1883-84. Career: came to Cal., 1849; miner, trader, blacksmith, wagon maker, 1850; farming and stock raising from 1850; Sacramento sheriff, 1873. Mem. of Cal. Constitutional Convention, 1878; mem., State Agri. Soc., 1867-1906; assemblyman from Sacramento, 1883-84; Dem. candidate for state senate, 1888; railroad comnr., 1894; pres. of railroad comn. for four years.

Lawrence, John H., b. Jan. 7, 1904, Canton, S.D., d. Sept 7, 1991. Appointed by Governor Reagan, 1970-83. Education: University of South Dakota, 1926; M.D., 1930, Harvard University. Career: Conducted pioneer research in using artificial radiation in treating cancer patients; dir. of the Donner Laboratory at Berkeley until appointment as Regent; had been with Donner Lab since its beginnings in 1935; brother of Ernest O. Lawrence.

Leach, Howard H., b. June 19, 1930, Salinas, Calif. Appointed by governor Deukmejian, 1990-2001. Committees: Health Services, 1999-2000; Audit, 2000; Investments, 2000-01; Chairman, Oversight of the Dept. of Energy, 2000-01; Chairman of the Board, 1993-95. Education: B.S. Economics, 1952, Yale University. Career: President or Chairman and major stockholder in several food growing and shipping companies, including Cypress Farms, Royal Packing Co., American Farms, Inc.; named Ambassador to France by President George W. Bush in 2001, after his term as Regent expired.

Lee, David S, b. June 23, 1937, China. Appointed by Governor Wilson as Regent, 1994-2006. Committee memberships (2000-01): Audit, Finance, Health Services (Vice Chair). Education: Born in China, Mr. Lee holds an honorary doctorate of engineering and a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Montana State University and a master's degree in the same field from North Dakota State University. Career: David S. Lee is Chairman of the Board of Communications Corporation and Cortelco. Currently Mr. Lee is a member of the boards of directors of ACT Manufacturing, ESS Technology, Linear Technology Corporation, Accela, Daily Wellness Co., Telemax Communications, Pacific International Center for High Technology Research and the California Chamber of Commerce, and is Honorary President of Asian Culture Teachings. He was an advisor to Presidents Bush and Clinton on the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiation (Office of the U.S. Trade Representative/Executive Office of the President) and to former Governor Wilson through the California Economic Development Corporation and the council on California Competitiveness. Mr. Lee has served on the Board of Governors for California Community Colleges.

Lee, Lester H., b. June 15, 1931, China. Appointed by Governor Wilson, 1993-94. Committees (1993-94): Audit; Affirmative Action Policies; Education Policy; Vice-Chairman, Oversight of the Dept. of Energy. Education: B.S. Mehcanical Engineering, 1952, University of Illinois; M.S. Career: Chairman and President of Recortec, inc., 1970-present; served on President Bush's Commission on Executive Exchange, 1990-91.

Lee, R. Marilyn, b. May 15, 1948, Los Angeles, Calif., Ex officio Regent as Alumni Association President, 1987-88. Committees (1987-88): Finance, Audit, Grounds and Buildings. Education: B.A. Political Science, 1969, UC Santa Barbara; J.D., 1977, McGeorge School of Law. Career: Lawyer; Administrator, Times Mirror Co.

Levey, Edgar Coleman, b. Aug. 4, 1881, S.F.; d. Oct. 9, 1962, S.F. Ex officio Regent as speaker of the assembly, 1927-33. Education: A.B. 1903, UCB; LL.B. 1905, Hastings Coll. of Law. Career: admitted to Cal. bar, 1905; S.F. asst. dist. atty., 1906-10; assemblyman from S.F., 1925-33, 1937-38; chmn., Joint Legislative Comn. of Traffic Hazards and Public Liability Ins., 1927-29; chmn., Joint Legislative Comn. on Taxation, 1929-31; gen. counsel, dir., Assoc. Levin, Judith, b. April 10, 1942, Los Angeles, Calif. Ex officio Regent as Alumni Association President, 1995-96; 1997-98. Committees (1997-98): Audit, Educational Policy, Finance, Investments. Education: B.S. Education, 1964, UC Los Angeles. Career: served 2 terms as Alumni Regent.

Ligot-Gordon, Dexter Appointed Student Regent-designate until July 1, 2002, at which time he will become Student Regent for a one-year term. Education: UC Berkeley undergraduate.

Lincoln, Luther H., b. Nov. 20, 1914, Froid, Mont.; d. June 28, 1980. Ex officio Regent as speaker of the assembly, 1955-59. Education: Dana Coll., Nebr. Career: assemblyman from Alameda county, 1948-58; subdivider, home builder, 1935-.

Link, George H., b. March 26, 1939. Ex officio Regent as Alumni Association President, 1974-75. Education: A.B. Political Science, 1961, UC Berkeley; L.L.B., 1964, Harvard University. Career: UCB Student Body President, 1960-61; partner in San Francisco law firm, Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison.

Little, Walter J., b. Sept. 13, 1849, Hammond, Ind.; d. Oct. 11, 1960, L.A. Ex officio Regent as speaker of the assembly, 1933-34. Education: 1913-17, U.S.C. Coll. of Law. Career: U.S. Army, 1917-18; L.A. law practice, 1917-55; assemblyman from L.A. county, 1924-33; legislative advocate for railroads 1933-60. Vice-pres., Assn. of Am. Railroads at time of death.

Low, Frederick Ferdinand, b. June 30, 1828, Frankfort, Me.; d. July 21, 1894, S.F. Elected Honorary Regent, June 1868-82, resigned, Nov., 1868. Career: apprenticed to East Indian firm of Russell, Sturges and Co., 1843; assoc. with F. W. Brown and Co., Boston, 1846-49; participated in Cal. gold rush of 1849; partner, 1850-54, Low Bros., S.F.; Low Bros. and Co., 1855-61; accomplished merger of almost all inland steamship lines on S.F. Bay and Sacramento River, 1854; Congressman, 1862-63; U.S. Collector, Port of S.F., 1863; U.S. Minister to China, 1870-74; joint mgr., Anglo-Cal. Bank, S.F., 1874-91; retired, 1891.

Lozano, Hector C., b. Oct. 24, 1956, Lozano, Texas. Appointed Student Regent 1979-80. Education: UC Davis, Sociology. Career: Student Regent from Davis Campus; active in many Chicano organizations, including Los Machetes, Campesion Emergency Fund, and Chicano Pre-Law Assoc.

Lozano, Monica. Appointed by Governor Davis, 2001-2013. Career: President, CEO, La Opinión, the nation's largest Spanish-language daily newspaper; member of California State Board of Education, 1999-2001, President, 2000-01; member California Postsecondary Education Commission; serves on Board of Directors of the Alliance for Student Achievement; Board of Trustees for University of Southern California.

Luke, Sherrill, b. Sept. 19, 1928, Los Angeles, Calif. Ex officio Regent as Alumni Association President, 1989-90. Committees (1989-90): Educational Policy, Finance. Lynch, John Conant, b. Nov. 23, 1851, Ashland, O.; d. Nov. 28, 1941, S.F. Ex officio Regent as speaker of the assembly, 1895-96. Education: Overland College; U. La.; University of Chicago.
