Kenneth
S. Norris
Professor of Natural History and Chair of the Environmental Studies
Department, UC Santa Cruz, Assistant Professor of Desert Biology and
Herpetology, UC Los Angeles, and Founder of the UC Natural Reserve
Ssytem
1924-1998
"Ken Norris was always an idea man, and one of his greatest ideas
. . . was the UC Natural Reserve System (NRS). As early as the late
1940s, . . . he began to notice how quickly field study sites were
literally losing ground to encroaching development. . . . Over time,
his frustration with such disturbances . . . engendered the notion
that perhaps the University of California could acquire certain lands
. . . that would represent a broad sampling of all the state's habitat
types and make them available for teaching and research. After all,
as Ken Norris would later say, 'You can't study nature without a nature
to study.'" |

 |
Eduardo Carrillo
Professor of Art, UC Santa Cruz
1937-1997
"Armed with the instinctive immediacy of a perpetual child--fascinated
with the colors, shapes, textures and rhythm of the sensory world--Ed
probed and prodded the land, here and in his beloved Baja, where he'd
go each year to putter with a favorite uncle, soak up the light of
his grandmother's village, work on a never-ending building project
and open himself to inspiration." |
|
|
 |
John
Halverson
Professor of Literature and Linguistics, UC Santa Cruz
1928-1997
"John's freedom to explore 'rather odd things!' took him in several
directions. In the 1970s he published a fascinating article on 'Right
Wing Rhetoric'and a short piece on 'Animal Categories and Terms of
Abuse.'" |
|
|
 |
Siegfried
Puknat
Professor of Literature, UC Santa Cruz
1914-1997
"Sig was genuinely devoted to the University of California; he
had a deep respect for its traditions, and he carried on those traditions
as a major figure on two of its campuses." |
|
|
 |
Kenneth
V. Thimann
Professor of Biology, UC Santa Cruz
1904-1997
"Wrote the Balzan Prize committee . . .'He is also an inspiring
leader of more than a generation of botanists and is regarded as the
doyen of a line of research that has revolutionized plant physiology.'" |
|
|
 |
Richard
E. Gordon
Professor of Politics, UC Santa Cruz
1945-1996
"Many a politics major counted her or his experience in Rick
Gordon's demanding courses as being the most valuable academic experiences
that UCSC bestowed upon them." |
|
|
 |
William
L. Burke
Professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics and Physics, UC Santa Cruz
1941-1996
"He grew up with a deep love of books, nature, and craftsmanship
in all things, and with exceptional talents in physics and mathematics." |
|
|
 |
Page
Smith
Provost of Cowell College and Professor of History, UC Santa Cruz,
and Assistant Professor of Historical Studies, UC Los Angeles
1917-1995
"Contrarieties and contradictions, the mysteries of human conduct,
did not disturb him and he responded feelingly to words of Walt Whitman's,
which conveyed this unfathomable complexity.
Do I contradict myself?
Very well, I contradict myself.
I contain multitudes."

 |
Nancy
Makepeace Tanner
Professor of Anthropology, UC Santa Cruz
1933-1989
"In 1981, Professor Tanner published a path-breaking book, On
Becoming Human (Cambridge University Press) in which she traced
the transition from ape to australopithecine in human evolution, based
on her analysis of fossil and archaeological data. The book, which
has been reprinted twice, presented a powerful new theory about women's
roles in human evolution and was widely praised." |
|
|
 |
Joseph
S. Silverman
Professor of Literature, UC Santa Cruz and UC Los Angeles, and Provost
of Adai E. Stevenson College, UC Santa Cruz
1924-1989
"His marvelous sense of humor was legendary. But, for many of
us who knew and worked with Joe in professional terms, in addition
to his great learning, his sensitivity to literary problems, and his
superb teaching, one of his extraordinary characteristics was what
can only be called his wisdom; his unerring capacity to know what
was right in professional and in human terms." |
|
|
 |
Peter
Banham
Professor of Art History, UC Santa Cruz
1922-1988
"He stretched and even redefined the bounds of what constituted
architectural history, both in his scholarly books and in the numerous
journalistic pieces he constantly produced, gaining worldwide acclaim
among a variety of audiences--academic, professional, and popular." |
