Introduction
The Library at UC Berkeley provides special assistance to users with
physical and learning disabilities to facilitate their use of the Library
and collections. If you have a disability that limits your independent use
of a campus library, you will find a list of Library Contacts for Users With Disabilities online, and
in the GLADIS library catalog
by typing "NEWS DISABLED" at the prompt. The Loop service may be of interest if you need assistance getting to a campus library
building.
In addition to the specialized library services described below, users
are encouraged to become familiar with the core library services available
to them as undergraduate students,
graduate students, faculty, visiting
scholars, or visitors. For further
information about library services, contact Holliday Cullimore at
hcullimo@library.berkeley.edu or (510) 643-1477.
For other related campus services, UC Berkeley students may contact the Disabled Students' Program (DSP)
at 260 Cesar Chavez Student Center, by phone at (510) 642-0518, or by TTY
at (510) 642-6376.

Finding and Using Library Materials
All Library users are responsible for complying with due dates and other
library borrowing rules for all materials checked out in their name.
Library staff at all libraries can assist you with services such as:
- Facilitating use of the Pathfinder and Melvyl library catalogs
- Paging books from stacks and shelf areas (may be on delayed basis)
- Extending loan periods or modifying other rules (when possible)
- Accepting telephone requests to confirm that a book is available
- Calling another library to confirm the availability of books and
periodicals
- Setting up personal equipment in a study area for individual use (if
space allows)
- Assisting with photocopying of a limited number of pages from library
books and journals. For extensive photocopying, consult the DSP office in
the Cesar Chavez Student Center about alternatives.
If the library unit is busy or the assistance you need will take some
time, a library staff member may ask you to return later. Service priority
is given to UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff.
Proxy Borrower Cards
If you are a UC Berkeley student, faculty, or staff member with a
physical disability, you may be eligible to obtain a proxy borrower card
for a specified friend or attendant to borrow library materials for you.
To apply for a proxy card, complete and return to the Privileges Desk (Doe Library, floor 1)
an application letter, or call (510)
642-3403. Issuance of proxy cards for non-students and staff will be
determined by the applicant's particular circumstances.
Reference Assistance
The ability to provide reference assistance may vary from unit to unit.
You are encouraged to make an appointment with a Library Contacts for Users With Disabilities for reference
services such as:
- Off-campus access to the library catalogs and other electronic library
resources
- Explanation and description of library resources
- Instruction using specialized electronic library resources
- Help with extensive bibliographic citations
You may also send your reference, research, and "how do I" questions to
the reference staff via email. Click the "Ask a Question" button on a
search results page in Pathfinder, or go to www.lib.berkeley.edu/Help/Ask.html.
Assistive Technology
All students currently registered and eligible for DSP services who
require the need for assistive technology may utilize the Assistive Technology Center
(ATC) (formerly known as the Cave). The ATC is located in 224
Moffitt, on the classroom side of the building. For additional
information, contact Lucy Greco at (510) 643-7591.
All libraries have at least one wheelchair-accessible station. Moffitt
Library, Floor 3 (entry floor) has the widest range of specialized
equipment in the Library with 3 adjustable height tables, a print enlarger
machine, and one station with enlarged font and a Track Ball.
Text Telephone Communications
For deaf and hearing-impaired Library users, a text telephone (TTY) is
available at the Reference Desk (Doe Library, floor 2). To place a call to
the Library from a TTY, dial (510) 642-0704. Alternatively, California
Relay Service enables communications between TTY and non-TTY users all
hours of the day at no charge.
Information for Users with learning disabilities
Library users with learning disabilities that impede their use of
library services or collections should explain to staff what assistance is
needed. Library staff will comply with requests such as reading a call
number or providing oral or written directions to locate library
materials.
