Borrowing and Renewing Materials
UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students can borrow materials using their current Cal ID card as their library card. Others may obtain a library card at the Privileges Desk in Doe Library. Please consult their Borrowing page for details on library cards.
Loan periods vary depending on the library and type of material. The Science Libraries use the following loan periods in general:
- Books: 1 month
- Journals: 2 hours, 1 day, or 1 week
- Maps: 1 week
- Reserves: 2 hours, 1 day, or 1 week
- Reference: Library use only
- Locked case: Library use only
Exceptions: Loan periods for journals vary across the libraries, and some libraries may have other formats in their collections. Please check with the circulation staff at each library about loan periods for these materials.
Materials should be returned to the circulation desk during hours the library is open, and to the book return when the library is closed, to avoid overdue penalties.
Renewals and My OskiCat
Renew your items via My OskiCat:
- How to renew
- Note: there is a limit of eleven renewals on all items except for materials on one-year loan. Materials with one-year loan periods have a maximum of three renewals.
You can also use My OskiCat to manage your library account:
- Keep track of due dates.
- Renew items.
- Manage your holds ("requests").
- View your preferred searches.
- View your lists.
Holds and Requests
If an item is checked out by another user or stored in NRLF, you can recall the item using the Request option in OskiCat. The pick-up location will put the item on hold for you and notify you by e-mail when it is delivered from NRLF or returned by the other user.
