Open eBooks Online

It is possible to find many other types of books digitized and available online for free. Many of these are open because they are no longer protected by copyright. In other cases, the author has chosen to make a book available for use even if protected by copyright by applying a Creative Commons or other license to it. 

Try searching here:

  • Google Books - Advanced Search. By following this link, you can search Google Books by choosing a filter for only "full view only." This will limit your results to books that are fully open via Google Books.
  • HathiTrust. You can search HathiTrust by choosing a filter for only "Full Text". This will limit your results to books that are fully open and available for download.
  • Internet Archive - eBooks & Texts. The Internet Archive and Open Library offers over 11,000,000 fully accessible books and texts. There is also a collection of 550,000 modern eBooks that may be borrowed or downloaded by the print-disabled at
  • Online Books. Maintained by the University of Pennsylvania Library, this resource provides extensive lists and indexes of open books across a wide variety of subjects.
  • National Academic Press. The National Academies Press (NAP) was created by the National Academy of Sciences to publish reports of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, operating under a charter granted by the Congress of the United States. They offer thousands of ebooks for download by chapter or the entire book. You must create a free account to download books.
  • eBooks@Adelaide. Over 1000 classic texts online
  • Project Gutenberg. Offers over 53,000 free ebooks: choose among free epub books, free kindle books, download them or read them online.


eBooks Through the Library

Can't find a book online to link to? The Library may have purchased or licensed an e-copy for campus-affiliated users, and you can search our catalog for them below. When you find an eBook you want in the Library catalog, you can link to that eBook in bCourses, or even link to a particular chapter within the eBook in some cases.

And if you don't find what you want in our catalog, ask us to purchase something!
