"As David guided her through the narrow door, Jane opened her eyes and gasped. 'Oh my God!' she exclaimed as they stepped onto the catwalk on top of the South Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Accidentally disturbing a nesting pair of seagulls who went fluttering and squawking aloft, David undid the safety chain and pulled an awestruck Jane onto the deck. 'Sorry about that,' he said, gesturing to the soaring birds. 'They don't get too many visitors at night.'
Jane couldn't stop looking around. Every sensation at that very moment was new, foreign in an almost unimaginable way. Exploding with excitement, she ran to the chest-high bulkhead wall and peered down to the roadway. Her hair blown back, her eyes stinging deliciously, she saw the twin rivers of red and white lights as the night's traffic coursed over the bridge.
Looking across the bay at San Francisco's unique skyline, the city's buildings standing like luminous dominoes, Jane shouted over the coming wind, 'Are you kidding me? How did you do this?'
David joined her at the wall. 'Friends in high places.'"
