Bynner taught poetry at the University of California from 1918-1919, and then moved to Santa Fe, where he was soon joined by his former student, Walter “Spud” Johnson. They traveled to Mexico with D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, and appear in Lawrence’s novel The Plumed Serpent as the gay couple Owen and Villiers.
