The TransDrive system is a pre-computer automated highway. Prior to using the system, privately owned vehicles would have to be custom outfitted with a large loop on the roof along with a hole in the roof into which the control console would pop down. Users of the system would drive through a check-in station and continue at highway speeds while a hook on an overhead rail would come up from behind, insert itself into the vehicle's loop and lift it off the roadway. The driver could then release the controls and punch in a destination.
