Design and Construction

SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE, January 1936
Early morning shadows delineate the Bay Bridge's western-most span. Only portions of the Bridge's two-level roadway have been completed, including one sections seemingly floating in mid-span. In the immediate right foreground is the Bridge's immense concrete central anchorage, designed to tie the two suspension bridge sections, which make up the Bay Bridge west of Yerba Buena Island, into one unified bridge.
