Xala (The Curse) (Senegal, 1975)

Directed by Sembene Ousmane. In a mythical African country, a rich, self-made businessman and member of the post-colonial ruling elite takes on a third wife to show the world his wealth, only to be stricken by a curse resulting in impotency. His efforts at getting cured lead to disasterous yet comical results. Inspired by the novel by Sembene Ousmane (PQ3989.S46 X3; PR9344.5.A4 no.175 Main Stack also other editions). Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl (China, Hong Kong, USA, 1998)

Directed by Joan Chen. Between 1967 and 1976, nearly 8 million Chinese youths were "sent down" for specialized training to the remotest corners of the country. The young and beautiful Xiu Xiu dreamt of becoming a horse trainer in Tibet, far away from her busy city home. Her training begins in the isolated plains of Tibet but slowly Xiu Xiu discovers that she is unlikely to ever see her home again without a wealthy sponsor. Her world becomes a horrifying cage, where "patrons" promise her escape in exchange for her sexual compromise. 100 min.

Yaaba (Burkina Faso, Switzerland, France, 1989)

Directed by Idrissa Ouedraogo. A young girl and her cousin Bila happen upon an old witch outcast by their village in Burkina Faso many years before. Although forbidden by his parents to have any contact with the old lady, Bila is drawn to her mystique and the fear she brings to the village. In More with English subtitles. 90 min.
