America, America (1963)

Directed by Elia Kazan. Cast: Stathis Giallelis, Frank Wolff, Harry Davis, Elena Karam, Estelle Hemsley, Lou Antonio. Elia Kazan's own words begin the saga of young Stavros, who leaves his war-torn homeland behind to begin a new life. With his family's meager fortune and his father's blessing, Stavros encounters both allies and adversaries on a dramatic trek. He ultimately achieves his dream through sheer determination and will, thereby earning his nickname : America America. Combining autobiographical elements with the experiences of his uncle, this is Kazan's most personal film. Kazan sought a non-romantic 'documentary' style and for the first time used a predominantly non-professional cast. 169 min. ; Credits and other information from the Internet Movie Database
