GeoData@UC Berkeley: A new way to find and map geospatial data

GeoData@UC Berkeley is the library's new geoportal that allows any library user to search for, find, preview, and download geospatial data in a variety of formats. In addition to allowing users to geographically search for geospatial and cartographic data, GeoData@UC Berkeley allows novice users to create custom maps using only a web browser. If you're at all interested in digital maps, web mapping, or even GIS, you'll find GeoData@UC Berkeley useful.

Come to this LibTech training session to learn more about how GeoData@UC Berkeley works, how it can help you help students and faculty find maps and geospatial data, and how the library is enhancing its geospatial data collection through crowd sourcing. You'll get a chance to work hands-on with the site during the session.

As smartphones and location-aware mobile devices continue to blur the line between phone and GPS units, location-based services continue to rise in popularity and utility. Library users can scan QR codes provided by OskiCat to help them find library material; museums can offer audio and text tour information at an item level; opportunities to participate in the collection and dissemination of geospatial data continue to increase with services like Gowalla and Google Places.

This class will take a look at some of the features of mobile/smartphone technology including using QR codes to find out more about what you're seeing, checking-in with Gowalla to find out about where you are, and using Layar to find out what's there.

If you have a smart phone (iOS or Android), please bring it. Install your favorite QR code reader for an enhanced experience. If you're interested in creating an account with Gowalla and downloading Layar, doing so beforehand will be helpful
