Library Instruction Request Form
UC Berkeley classroom instructors may schedule a library instruction
session for their undergraduate and graduate students, tailored to the
course and the students' research topics. Library sessions can cover a
range of print and electronic resources, as well as general research
strategies. We recommend course instructors submit requests at least
three weeks in advance of preferred dates to ensure the
availability of library staff, access to an instruction room, and
preparation of materials.
To request a library session customized for your course, review the scheduling tips, complete all information below, and
submit this form. Upon receipt of your request, a librarian will contact
you to further discuss your class needs and to confirm the presentation
time and location. Your request is not confirmed until you have
received our reply, usually within three business days.
TIPS FOR SCHEDULING SUCCESSFUL LIBRARY SESSIONS
Please also see our guide, Effective
Assignments Using Library Resources.
What
The Teaching Library offers instructional sessions on library research for
your undergraduate students, tailored to your students' actual topics. We
can offer hands-on training on a range of resources, as well as general
search strategies.
Why
These skills are critical for students' undergraduate education as well as
for lifelong learning. Most students do not know how to use a large,
complex academic research library, with its abundance of online article
databases and other resources.
When
Please allow three weeks' notice in advance of your preferred date.
These sessions are most effective after students have chosen their topics
and when they have an immediate and concrete need for the skills we teach.
Please send us your reading list, a copy of the research assignment, and a
list of students' actual topics a minimum of one week in
advance of the workshop so we can customize the presentation to the
students' research needs.
Who
Your students, you, and an expert Library staff member. Your
presence is requested so that you are aware of the sources we've
shown and the issues we've discussed and will also be able to answer
questions about the assignment. Your presence also indicates to students
that the library session is an integral part of the course.
Where
We'll invite you to our computer classrooms in Moffitt or Doe Libraries,
which include 13-20 student workstations for hands-on work as well as a
projector and screen for demonstrations.
If you are unable to schedule a customized library session for your class
and have fewer than 20 students, you may require your students attend one
of the Library's free open workshops and
tours. Students may request a certificate of attendance at the end of
the workshop. For other alternatives, please contact Aija Kanbergs at
643-7486, or at akanberg@library.berkeley.edu.
