Class Campaigns
Why Support the Library?
Cal alumni have many reasons for affectionate memories of the library, from its immense collections of books, periodicals, and other materials, to the cozy hours they spent in the Morrison Library or basking in the sunshine outside Doe.
College anniversaries and reunions are a special opportunity for alumni to reflect on their undergraduate years at Cal, to reconnect with their alma mater and to make a special investment in Cal's excellence. Class campaigns that support Berkeley's library have a proud history, beginning with an extraordinarily successful Class of '56 reunion campaign in 1996 that was the first in the country dedicated to library preservation activities.
There are many ways to participate in your class campaign. Many donors choose to make a pledge over five years, making it easier to provide a more significant gift. Other options include gifts of appreciated securities, bequests, estate plans, and outright cash gifts. Current and upcoming class campaigns that support the library are below.
War Years Classes ('45-'47) - Bancroft Library Centennial
The War Classes are supporting The Bancroft Library with part of their 60th Reunion Fund. By participating in the success of Bancroft's Centennial Campaign for renovated facilities, the War Classes are helping to ensure that Bancroft's irreplaceable collections remain secure and accessible to researchers and scholars for at least another hundred years.
Class of '56 -Library Preservation Endowment Fund
Goal of $1 million
This 50th reunion class campaign is generously supporting the Berkeley's Library Preservation Department. The department maintains the library's extraordinary collections in good condition to ensure they will be available to generations of students. The conservators handle binding, repair, preservation, and replacement of materials too damaged or deteriorated to be preserved in original form.
The Class of '58 - Endowment for the Mark Twain Papers
Goal of $580,000 by their 50th reunion
The Class of '58 endowment will help to support the publication of 70 scholarly volumes of The Works and Papers of Mark Twain, the Mark Twain Project's ambitious work in progress. The Project is also making the papers available in electronic form to aid in worldwide scholarly research.
The Class of '61 - Library Endowment for Collection
Goal of $1.5 million (total campaign goal)
In order to meet the diverse research needs of Berkeley's world-class students, the library must continue to maintain world-class collections. New fields of research are emerging along with new methods of accessing library materials, and the Library must constantly keep pace with the growing demands of faculty and students. The Class of '61 Library Endowment will provide continual support for the acquisition of collections, enabling the brightest minds at Cal to have access to the materials they need, both today and for generations to come.
