Find Government Information

Federal, state, and international government information is available in print, microform and electronic formats in many UC Berkeley libraries. The Library has been a full depository for California documents since 1945 and acquires 78% of all published US documents, with complete holdings from 1884-1962. The Library has been a full depository for European Union documents since 1964, and a full depository of United Nations publications since 1946.

All government publications are available for on-site use by the university community and the general public. More information is available at the Government Information web site.

Pathfinder (UC Berkeley)
Pathfinder is the catalog of materials in UC Berkeley library collections, including government documents. Collections of non-circulating government information reference books are located in the Government and Social Sciences Collection and Reference Hall (Doe Library, floor 2). Many government documents are available in the Gardner (Doe) Stacks and other campus libraries, and some can be accessed online.

To locate a document using Pathfinder:

  • Use a title phrase or title keyword search with terms from the document title.
  • Use a corporate author keyword search with the name of the issuing body or organization.
  • From the list of titles, click on "Availability" to see if an item is on the shelf.
  • Note the Location of items; those with "Electronic Location(s)" are available online.

Government Information Databases (databases at UCB)
The Library subscribes to a number of databases with access to a wide range of information produced by and about the US Federal and California governments, as well as the European Union and United Nations. Browse these lists to select a source that covers the organization or type of information you are researching.

MelvylŪ (all UC campuses)
Melvyl is the catalog of materials available from the libraries at the ten UC campuses, and other research collections in the state. Current UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff may request materials not owned by UC Berkeley through the online Request feature in Melvyl.
