Volcano Press has always been at the vanguard of publishing books that address the issues of family violence, child abuse and women's issues. Ruth Gottstein, founder and publisher of Volcano Press and a social activist, was formerly Director of Glide Publications in San Francisco when they published in 1976 one of the early books on domestic violence titled: "Battered Wives" by Del Martin. It became a classic and readers still request permission to copy the "Letter" from this book.

In 1984 Ruth bought Glide Publications, renamed it Volcano Press and moved the press to Volcano. She continued to publish and distribute books on domestic violence and has added titles on child abuse, youth and elder issues, sexual assault, disabilities, children's books and Mother Lode history. Several of the family violence books are written by experts in the field and geared to both professional and laypeople. The press web site with its links to organizations, reports and articles provides additional resources for awareness, education and prevention related to abuse.

One of their best sellers was "Learning to Live Without Violence; a Handbook for Men" published in 1985 and written for men going into counseling in abuse situations. This book was published in Spanish and Japanese. Another first book on the subject of menopause was "Menopause Naturally" by Sadja Greenwood and "Period." written for girls.

For Ruth, Volcano Press represents personal and professional fulfillment "The wonderful combination of living in Amador County and yet being connected to the rest of the world enables me to continue doing what I do with enthusiasm, even though I'm 80 years old."
