The following reference resources provide overviews, summaries, definitions, biographical information, statistics, chronologies, and bibliographical references. Finding Legislation/Policy Overviews

  • CQ Researcher. 1991- This weekly publication covers the most current and controversial issues of the day with complete summaries, insight into all sides of the issues, bibliographies and more. Users may browse through articles in the current issue or search for past articles using words, dates or other criteria. Type "immigration" into the search box for a list of relevant reports. All are available in full text.
  • CQ Weekly. 1983- Pre-eminent resource for nonpartisan information on Capitol Hill. Provides weekly updates, summaries of major legislation, political news, etc. For a monthly review of California politics and government see: California Journal (1970-present) (JK8701 C22 GREF).
  • Lexis/Nexis Congressional. Provides access to federal bill tracking services back to 1989; indexing and abstracts to congressional publications back to 1970; full text of congressional committee reports and testimony, and the Congressional Record. For indexing to older (back to 1789) hearings, documents, reports, and committee prints see Congressional Indexes. For the text of public laws back to 1789 click on "Statutes at Large" under the Laws section. The Library also has bound volumes of the US Statutes at Large (1789 to present) at: KA10 A2 GREF.
  • PolicyFile. Indexes and abstracts public policy literature from think tanks, research institutes, etc. with links to full text where available.

Topics covered include statistical data overview, discussion of specific statistical programs (e.g., naturalization), and assistance in understanding the data with information on data collection and data limitations.

Finding Articles: Journals

  • Search by author, title or keyword subject in the following databases. Access from Library web page. Many of the resources provide full text of articles. For those that do not, look up journal titles in Pathfinder or Melvyl.
  • America History and Life. 1964- Contains abstracts of journal articles and citations for books and dissertations on the history and culture of US and Canada. For other countries use Historical Abstracts.
  • Chicano Database. 1967- Indexes materials about Mexican-American topics, and materials about other Latino cultures (Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central American immigrants) since 1992. Coverage includes art, language, sociology, public policy, economics, history, literature, politics, and law
  • Columbia international affairs online. (CIAO) Full text of conference proceedings, working papers, and books as well as journal abstracts, and links to international affairs internet sources.
  • Expanded Academic ASAP. 1980- Indexes over 9 million articles from popular magazines, general interest journals, scholarly journals and newspapers in the humanities, social sciences, and general sciences. A good starting point for any research topic.
  • JSTOR. Provides full text of backfiles of core journals in selected academic fields. Does not include latest 3-5 years of titles. One can search by keyword in full text.
  • PAIS International. 1972- and PAIS Archive 1915-1976 Indexes books, articles, documents, reports of public and private agencies related to business, economic and social conditions, public policy and administration, and international relations published in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish throughout the world.
  • Sociological abstracts. 1963- Indexes over 1,900 journals, books, dissertations, and reviews in the social sciences on sociological topics as well as selected anthropology, criminology, demography, law, social psychology, and urban development.
  • Worldwide political science abstracts. 1975- Provides citations, abstracts, and indexing of the international serials literature in political science and its complementary fields, including international relations, law, and public administration/policy.

Browse selected journals in migration/immigration, refugees, racial/ethnic relations, and identities/ethnicities. The current unbound issues of the following titles are located in the Heyns Reading Room of Doe (in Current Periodicals) except where noted. Online text may be available for many of these at least for current issues. Check Pathfinder by journal titles for the urls. For subject access check the indexes listed above.

Finding Media

The Media Resources Center , first floor, Doe has thousands of audio/video tapes and cds covering many fields. Titles are listed in Pathfinder/Melvyl plus there are videographies created for selected subject areas. US and International Governmental Organizations

  • U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. Formerly the INS, the new BCIS handles most immigration and naturalization services. The site is a great resource for information about American policy, past and present immigration/citizenship data and there are some very good reports providing an overview of the INS and American immigration history
  • International Labor Organization (ILO). The UN specialized agency which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights. The ILO has a strong interest in migrant labour, and has publications, data and other information on its web site.
  • International Organization for Migration (IOM). An inter-governmental organization that works with states and NGOs to settle migrants and collect information about migration. The web site offers publications and data.
  • Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. An agency of the United Nations, with a primary mission to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. A great resource for information about refugee numbers and flows around the world.

NGOs and Research Centers

Center for Migration Studies.

CMS in Staten Island New York is one of the premier institutes in the United States committed to facilitating the study of sociodemographic, historical, economic, political, legislative, and pastoral aspects of human migration and refugee movements. Established in 1964, CMS is a non-profit institute. The CMS WebSite provides information on the various ongoing CMS projects, information on the many CMS publications and journals, as well as news and announcements that would be of interest to those who are involved in migration studies.

  • Center for Immigration Studies. A Washington-based think tank, right of center. It publishes reports, analyzes data and also offers a very helpful free news/publications email clipping service.
  • Centre for Refugee Studies. CRS is an organized research unit of York University in Canada. Research activities have been arranged into five related programs, each with its own research unit: Gender; Refugee Law Research; Development, Displacement and Repatriation; Resettlement; and Prevention. The web site provides more information on the Centre, the research units, the education program, and a list of online refugee and human rights resources
  • European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations. Based in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Utrecht University, the Netherlands, this research centre concentrates on comparative research in the fields of international migration, ethnic relations, racism and ethnic conflict within the European context. Especially helpful are the extensive listings and information available at the WWW Virtual Library on Migration and Ethnic Relations.
  • Federation for American Immigration Reform. FAIR is a national, non-profit, public interest membership organization focused on the need for immigration reform. Founded in 1979, FAIR believes that the U.S. can and must have an immigration policy that is non-discriminatory and designed to serve the environmental, economic, and social needs of our country. FAIR seeks to improve border security, to stop illegal immigration, and to promote immigration levels consistent with the national interest-more traditional rates of about 300,000 a year.
  • Immigration History Research Center, University of Minnesota. An international resource on American immigration and ethnic history. It maintains archival and library collections, sponsors academic and public programs, and publishes bibliographic and scholarly works.
  • Migration Dialogue, UC Davis. Run under the auspices of UC Davis Professor Philip Martin, this is probably the best resource available on migration to rural America (e.g., migrant farm workers). They also publish the renowned Migration News newsletter which summarizes and analyzes the most important immigration and integration developments every quarter from around the world. These reports are available for free on the website.
  • Migration Policy Institute. A centrist/left of center think tank in Washington, DC. MPI offers some excellent, short policy overview papers (e.g., on welfare reform in the US), overviews of immigration policies around the world and they also have an international "data center" that carries immigration, refugee and citizenship stats from a variety of countries.
  • Public Policy Institute of California. A private, nonprofit organization that does research on population, economy, and governance and public finance. It has published a number of reports and working papers on migrants in California, including the undocumented, naturalization and educational achievement.
  • US Committee for Refugees. A non-profit organization initially set up to coordinate the United States' participation in the United Nations' International Refugee Year. Today it acts as a refugee advocate and helps coordinate refugee services.
