Secondary Source Journal Articles
America: History and Life UCB ONLY
Indexes over 2,000 journals published worldwide on the history of the US and Canada from prehistory to the present. Includes all key English-language historical journals; selected historical journals from major countries, state, and local history journals; and a targeted selection of hundreds of journals in the social sciences and humanities. Search can be combined with Historical Abstracts by clicking Chose Databases at the top of the search page.
Historical Abstracts UCB ONLY
Indexes over 2,000 journals, as well as historical book reviews and dissertations, published worldwide about all aspects of world history (excluding US and Canada) from 1450 to the present. Search can be combined with America: History and Life by clicking Chose Databases at the top of the search page.
Historical Statistics of the United States UCB ONLY
Comprehensive statistics and quantitative facts on US history. Coverage includes population, work and welfare, economics structure and economic sectors, and governance and international relations. Date coverage varies by subject with some data going back to 1790. Allows users to download tables in Excel or CSV; also download entire groups of tables as a zip file; create custom tables; merge columns from multiple tables to create custom tables, which can also be downloaded, printed, or graphed.
Humanities and Social Sciences Index Retrospective: 1907-1984. UCB ONLY
Citations (no full-text) to more than 1.3 million articles in over 1,200 periodicals in scholarly journals published throughout the 20th century in North America and Europe.
JSTOR UCB ONLY
Full-text scholarly articles from key History journals. Usually has a 2+year lag time in full text availability of current articles.
LexisNexis Academic UCB ONLY
Click on the Legal tab near the top of the page to find law reviews on various legal topics. The law reviews may site cases on your topic, and cases are primary source materials. In many instances, the citations to cases are linked to the case in this database.
PAIS/PAIS Archives UCB ONLY
Indexes books, journals, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, and web sources related to public policy, politics, economics, and social issues worldwide. Includes publications from over 120 countries. Some of the indexed materials are published in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Archive covers English-language material only. Search can be combined with Worldwide Political Science Abstracts for international legal history.
Project MUSE UCB ONLY
Offers full text of over 250 scholarly journals in the humanities and social sciences. For the humanities this is a close second to JSTOR.

One stop shopping for U.S. congressional publications. Provides index and abstracts of congressional publications back to 1789, including full text Congressional Hearings from 1824-present, full text Committee Prints from 1830-present, full text Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports from 1916-present, and legislative histories from 1970-present. United States Congressional Serial Set UCB ONLY
A full-text database of key publications of the United States Congress. Also includes publications of the executive departments relating to important public issues. The Serial Set is a critical resource for the study of all aspects of American history including international relations, explorations, commerce and industrial development, genealogy, and political, social, cultural, military and ethnic history. When complete, the database will offer approximately 13,800 volumes and over 12 million pages in searchable full-text.
Historical Newspapers (Proquest) UCB ONLY
Indexes articles from Chicago Defender (1905-1975), Chicago Tribune (1849-1986), Los Angeles Times (1881-1986), New York Times (1851-2004), San Francisco Chronicle (1865-1922), Wall Street Journal (1889-1990), and Washington Post (1877-1991).
Declassified Documents Reference System UCB ONLY
Over 75,000 documents and almost 500,000 pages of materials declassified via the Freedom of Information Act and regular declassification requests, making broad-based and highly targeted investigation of government documents possible. Nearly every major foreign and domestic event of these years is covered.
Online Archive of California
A searchable and browsable resource that brings together historical materials from a variety of California institutions, including museums, historical societies, and archives. Contains over 120,000 images; 50,000 pages of documents, letters, and oral histories; and 8,000 guides to collections. Images are organized into thematic and institutional collections, such as historical topics, nature, places, and technology. Use Google to search the Online Archive of California by entering site:oac.cdlib.org as part of your Google search.
Subject Index for the National Archives and Records Administration
This is the starting point for research using archives various U.S. government agencies. Records will most likely be in the Washington, DC area. Use Google to search the National Archives by entering site:archives.gov as part of your Google search.
