Decennial Censuses: 1940-2000
A census of population has been taken as part of the decennial censuses since 1790. Beginning with 1950 the census of population appears as a separate publication. Beginning with 1940 there is also a combined Census of Population and Housing. Census tract statistics were first published in 1940.Special bulletins, methodological reports and other related census documentation have different call numbers. Check the Bureau of the Census and library catalogs for references to these publications.
