Collection Description

The Library maintains a research collection to support the teaching and research of the faculty and students of University of California, Berkeley, English Department, which are widely recognized for their excellence. The English Department offers both the Bachelor of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. English classes offer "many different focuses: major authors, historical periods, genres, critical theories and methods, as well as cultural and multicultural studies” (text from the 2003/2005 General Catalog). The Library collects scholarly works as well as fiction, poetry and drama to meet the needs of the faculty and students of the department.

Reference materials are kept in the Reference Center (Doe Library, Floor 2). The major part of the collection is located in the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, with additional materials in the Moffitt Library (UNDE, core English-language). Manuscripts, archives, and rare materials are housed in the Bancroft Library.
