Search Engines & UC Berkeley Catalogs
Find a book that matches your topic and go to the call number range to browse. Check the references and bibliography. Catalogs often display little information about the contents of books, so when in doubt check.
Pathinder and Gladis. UC Berkeley libraries catalog. The telnet version Gladis has some features like detailed holdings information that can be important for historical research, e.g. volume numbers for large sets or reels of microfilm.
Melvyl. Catalog for all UC Campus libraries. Includes libraries on campus not in Pathfinder, e.g. the Boalt Law Library and Institute of Governmental Studies. Resources for Economists Search Engine. Custom economics search engine (powered by Google) of over 12,000 economics web sites.
Google Scholar. This search engine functions as both a key word database for articles and books. It automatically connects you to some licensed content held by the UC libraries. Search this source before all others.
Economics Databases
The UC Berkeley library databases are listed in the Electronic Resources Finder. Look under as Economics as a subject type to get a listing of article databases. Configure your browser according to the library proxy server service for access to databases from off campus.
America History & Life. Indexes journals worldwide on the history of the US and Canada. Includes English-language history journals; selected international journals, state, and local history journals; and a selection of journals in the social sciences and humanities.
Econlit. Comprehensive index to scholarly journal articles in economics. It also lists books and dissertations, and indexes articles within 'collective works' (books consisting of collections of essays or individual papers).
Geography. Database with excellent coverage of the international literature in international economic development and public policy issues. Coverage from 1990 to the present.
IDEAS. Largest bibliographic database on economics on the Internet, this site offers citations to thousands of full-text economics working papers and articles from peer-reviewed economics journals.
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences. Multidisciplinary database indexing journals, books, chapters, and reviews in economics, political science, and sociology, from more than 100 countries.
JSTOR. Full text of nearly 600 scholarly journals, including more than 70,000 issues, on a wide range of scholarly subjects, including economics.
National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Provides access to the NBER working paper series. The NBER is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. NBER Data and Data links provide access to government economic information such as business cycle data.
PAIS International & Archival. International database for materials in public affairs. Topics include agriculture, banking, demographics, the environment, finance, government, law, and political science.
Policyfile. Index to public policy in the areas of economics, politics, the environment, and social issues, taken from reports from a wide range of thinks tanks, Non-governmental organizations, international governmental organizations, and other institutions worldwide.
Worldwide Political Science Abstracts. Indexes books, journals, and dissertations in the field of political science
and related to international relations, law and politics, political economy,
public administration, and public policy.

Africa-Wide NiPAD. A comprehensive database covering journals, magazines, newspapers, broadcasts, books and more on all aspects of Africa including politics, history, economics, literature, music and natural sciences. Combines the databases previously known as African Studies and South African Studies
Bibliography of Asian Studies. Contains records on all subjects (especially humanities and social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide from 1971 to the present.
Black Studies Center. Includes three modules: The Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience which includes interdisciplinary essays on the Black Experience; International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), a database covering some 150 scholarly and popular Black Studies journals, many of them in full text; and the full text backfile of the influential black newspaper The Chicago Defender (1910-1975).
Black Studies Database. Indexes over 150 journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, pamphlets and reports relevant to the Black experience and the African Diaspora. Covers events critical to the study of Black life and culture outside of Africa including notable figures and topics in Black history, culture, and sports, as well as significant movements and events
Caribbean Abstracts. Contains abstracts in English of selected books and articles in the humanities and social sciences on topics related to the Caribbean which includes all the islands of the Caribbean archipelago as well as the mainland territories of Belize and the Guianas.
Handbook of Latin American Studies. Citations in the area of Latin American studies from journals, books, and conferences. Coverage from 1935. Sources are selected and annotated by scholars from the Library of Congress.
HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index). Indexes books, journals, conference proceedings, and official documents on Hispanic America (North, Central, and South), Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the United States-Mexico border region, and Hispanics in the United States.
Index Islamicus. Indexes literature on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world. Over 3,000 journals are monitored for inclusion in the database, together with conference proceedings, monographs, multi-authored works and book reviews. Journals and books are indexed down to the article and chapter level.
Quarterly Index to Africana Periodical Literature. Index published by the Library of Congress Nairobi Office, covers over 300 selected periodicals from 29 African countries. Also includes publications of non-governmental organizations.

Contemporary Women's Issues. Indexes a wide range of journals, hard-to-find newsletters, reports, pamphlets, fact sheets, and guides covering a broad array of gender-related issues such as violence, economic development, health, the military, education, human rights, and law. Covers sources published by organizations around the world.
Genderwatch. Includes magazines, academic journals, newspapers, newsletters, books, pamphlets, conference proceedings, and government reports that focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subject areas.
LGBT Life. Indexes more than 120 Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender (GLBT)-specific core periodicals and over 200 GLBT-specific core books and reference works. The product also contains data mined from over 40 priority periodicals and over 1,400 select titles. Also provides references to grey literature, newsletters, case studies, speeches, etc.
Sociological Abstracts. Indexes over 1,900 journals, books, dissertations, and reviews in the social sciences on sociological topics as well as selected anthropology, criminology, demography, law, social psychology, and urban development.

The following is a sample of some of the US agencies that deal with discrimination and poverty. Please also see the Government Information Pages for more information.
Commission on Civil Rights. Commission charged with collecting information relating to discrimination or a denial of equal protection because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin, or in the administration of justice.
Department of Education Office for Civil Rights. Mission is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence through enforcement of civil rights.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Site with extensive information about housing & urban development. See also the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity and especially the HUD Office of Policy Development & Research.
Department of Labor (DOL). See especially the Bureau of Labor Statistics for data on wages, inflation, earnings, employment and more.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). US agency responsible for oversight and coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations, practices, and policies, including civil rights, disabilities, age discrimination, and sexual harassment.
Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. Division within the federal government responsible for enforcing federal statutes prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, sex, disability, religion, and national origin. See also the DOJ Housing and Civil Enforcement and Fair Housing sections.
National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Federal agency created to administer laws governing relations between unions and employers in the private sector.
