Collection Description

The Doe Library/Gardner (MAIN) Stacks collection in demography supports research in that subject and related fields such as economics, public health, social geography, political science and statistics. We attempt to collect published results of demographic research which may be relevant for our students and faculty, and welcome your suggestions for acquisitions (see "Purchase Recommendation Form" below). Of course, of obvious concern to demographers is the availability of population data. The library's collection has historical runs of print censuses from around the world, and is acquiring more recent ones in digital formats. As the medium shifts to online access, we try to provide guidance and links to data from governments, nongovernmental organizations and international organizations.

Students of demography should take note of two particular services located within Doe Library. A group of government documents librarians have made available through their Government Information website a large variety of guides, links and access to data sets organized by geography and type of issuing organization. Also, in the Graduate Services room on the second floor, there are now two data workstations for use in social science data research. Undergraduates can also use them, but will need to do so by appointment and signing in at the desk. Any students interested should first contact the Data Services Librarian, Harrison Dekker (hdekker@library.berkeley.edu). A descriptive web page is to come shortly.

Finally, the Earth Sciences & Maps Library. while serving primarily the needs of physical geographers and earth scientists, has a vast collection of maps and gazetteers useful for anyone doing research in place-specific population study.
