Doe Library Building Projects

A series of projects will provide safer and more pleasant spaces for arts, humanities, social science and area studies scholars.

Now in progress

A major seismic retrofit of the Doe Annex (the east end of the building) is now under way, causing significant changes. This part of the building has housed The Bancroft Library, administrative offices, and the Newspapers & Microforms collection. Work on this major project will continue through Spring 2008.

  • What to expect
Temporary construction barricades have been installed in the 1st and 2nd floor hallways, closing off portions of the Doe Annex South Lobby, the former Copy Service vestibule, and Men's and Women's restrooms.

    Public restrooms open during construction

    • Women's, 1st floor (off Brown Exhibit Gallery)
    • Men's, 3rd floor (near Conference Room 303)
    • New unisex ADA restroom, Doe Basement
    • All Gardner Stacks & Moffitt Library restrooms

    Other changes

    • Elevator #6 (southeast corner of building) will be closed; other elevators will remain in operation.
    • Phone booths on the 1st floor will be closed, refinished, and reinstalled during construction.
  • Related moves
    • The Bancroft Library is open in temporary quarters at 2121 Allston Way, with a portion of its collection available until the new facility is completed.
    • The Regional Oral History Office has moved to a temporary location: 251 Evans Hall.
    • The Mark Twain Papers and Project offices have moved to a temporary location: 2195 Hearst St., Suite 330.
    • Current Periodicals have been moved to the freed-up space in the Heyns Reading Room. This room has been furnished with comfortable seating and improved lighting to create a welcoming environment that encourages on-site reading and browsing.
    • Newspapers & Microforms has moved to 40 Doe Library.
    • The Government Reference collection (marked GREF in our catalogs) has been moved from the Heyns Reading Room to the North Reading Room.
    • The Library Copy Center has moved from the Doe Library to a new permanent location adjacent to the third floor Moffitt Library entrance.
    • The Library Bookstore has moved to 132 Doe Library. It is open 11am - 2pm Monday through Thursday
    • The Library Administration and Library Systems Office have moved to temporary locations: Evans Hall, 2nd floor.

Completed

    • The North and Heyns Reading Rooms of the Doe Library are architectural treasures that signify to users the privilege and possibility of scholarship. These two grand spaces, part of the Reference Center, are linked by our vibrant Reference Hall, renovated and opened in 2002, where subject, format, and reference specialists are available to help users, and where students can schedule appointments for one-on-one research asssistance in our Research Advisory Service.

The North Reading Room is now open after an extensive renovation. Thanks to donor funds, this room has been restored to match its original state in 1910. This includes a new floor, fresh paint, new window treatments, refinished and restored historic tables and chairs, wireless capability, and new task lighting that echoes the original table lamps.

Any move causes some inconvenience for users, and we offer our apologies and assurances that this series of moves will be handled with user convenience uppermost in our minds. Library users who need help finding materials are encouraged to seek help at the second floor Reference Desk.
