Download and Install WinSCP and PuTTY on a Windows 2000 machine with FireFox

WinSCP is a secure FTP client that replaces SSH Secure File Transfer. PuTTY is a secure shell client that replaces SSH Secure Shell.

If you only need secure FTP access to a Library machine (example: ftp-only access to your work-related files on sunsite.berkeley.edu or library11.berkeley.edu), then you just need to download and install WinSCP.

However, if you also need secure shell access to a Library machine (example: sunsite.berkeley.edu or library11.berkeley.edu), then you must also download and install PuTTY.

Download and Install WinSCP

1. Click on this link to download WinSCP. The WinSCP page will open in a new browser window.


2. In the body of the page at http://winscp.net/eng/index.php, click on the WinSCP 4.0.5 released [Download] link.
   
   


3. Click on the link that reads Downloads.
   
   


4. In the section entitled WinSCP 4.0.5, click on the link that reads Installation package.
   
   


5. In the Opening winscp-405setup.exe window, click on the Save File button.
   
   


6. Save winscp405setup.exe to D:\download. Click on the Save button.
   
   


7. Open D:\download.
   


8. Double click on winscp405setup.exe.
   
   


9. In the Welcome to the WinSCP Setup Wizard window, click on the Next button.
   
   


10. In the License Agreement window, click on the Next button.
    
    


11. In the Setup type window, the Typical installation (recommended) radio button is selected. Click on the Next button.
    
    


12. In the Initial user settings window the Norton Commander interface radio button is selected. Click on the Next button.
    
    


13. In the Ready to Install window, you'll see that the program's destination location is C:\Program Files\WinSCP. Click on the Install button.
    
    


14. In the Completing the WinSCP Setup Wizard window, click on the Finish button.
    
    


15. The files will be installed to C:\Program Files\WinSCP, and the WinSCP client will open on your desktop.
    
    


16. Create and Save a session that connects to the Unix machine you frequently need to access.
    Example:
    Host name: library11.berkeley.edu
    User name: lweber
    Click on the Save button.
    
    


17. In the Save session as window, click on the OK button.
    
    


18. Your new Stored session will display.
    
    


19. At this time you may also want to click on Environment - Directories in the left hand window to create and save the remote directory path of the saved session.
    
    


20. Type in the applicable Remote directory path, and click on the Save button.
    
    


21. In the Save session as window, click on OK.
    
    


22. Click the Close button to close the application.
    
    


23. To open WinSCP again, double click on the WinSCP shortcut icon that should appear on your computer desktop.
    
    

Download and Install PuTTY

1. Click on this link to download and install putty-0.60-installer.exe.


2. In the Opening putty-0.60-installer.exe window click on the Save File button.
   
   


3. Save putty-0.60-installer.exe to D:\download.
   
   


4. Open D:\download. Double click on putty-0.60-installer.exe.
   
   


5. The Welcome to the PuTTY Setup Wizard window will appear. Click on the Next button.
   
   


6. In the Select Desitnation Location window, click on the Next button.
   
   


7. In the Select Start Menu Folder window, click on the Next button.
   
   


8. In the Select Additional Tasks window, click on the checkbox for Create a desktop icon for PuTTY. Click on the radio button that reads For all users. Click on the Next button.
   
   


9. In the Ready to Install window, click on the Install button.
   
   


10. In the Completing the PuTTY Setup Wizard window, click on the Finish button.
    
    


11. The PuTTY README file will pop up. Read and close the file.
    
    


12. Find the PuTTY shortcut icon on your desktop. Double click on the icon.
    
    


13. By default, PuTTY uses the keyboard command Ctrl h to move the cursor backwards. For each Saved Session, you'll need to configure PuTTY to use your keyboard's Back Space key to move the cursor backwards.


14. In the Host Name (or IP address) box type in the name of the server you need to access.
    Example: sunsite.berkeley.edu
    In the Saved Sessions box type in the login or user name of the session.
    Example: webman
    Click on the Save button.
    
    


15. Click on the Saved Sessions name that you want to configure.
    Example: webman
    
    


16. On the left side of the PuTTY Configuration window, click on Keyboard.
    
    


17. Click on the Control-H radio button. Click on Session on the left side of the window.
    
    


18. Click on the Saved Sessions name you just configured.
    Example: webman.
    Click on the Save button.
    
    


19. Remember, you must configure the Keyboard backspace for each Saved Session in PuTTY, or you may contact Giulia Hill (ghill@library) in the Library Systems Office to request tcsh (t shell) for your machine account.


20. Printing via PuTTY requires configuration as well.
    Load a Saved Session.
    Example: webman.
    
    


21. On the left side of the PuTTY Configuration window, click on Terminal.
    In the Remote-controlled printing section at the bottom of the window you'll see that the Printer to send ANSI printer output to: window reads None [printing disabled].
    
    


22. Click on the Printer to send ANSI printer output to: window downward arrow. Select the appropriate printer from the list.
    Example: HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL6
    
    


23. On the left side of the PuTTY Configuration window click on Session. Click on the Saved Sessions name you just configured.
    Example: webman
    Click on the Save button.
