Library Calendar

The Library Calendar is part of the campus calendar network and includes Library events and exhibits of interest to the campus community and general public.

Anyone with a CalNet ID can submit an item, which is then reviewed by the editor before posting. For more information, or if these instructions don't work as expected, contact John Kupersmith (jkupersm@library), the Library Calendar editor.

Web pages may link to the Library Calendar in several ways:

Link to the calendar's homepage
By default, this starts out showing the current week's events in all libraries:

http://libevents.berkeley.edu/

Deep link to a single event
Call up the full record for the event, then save the URL. For example, here's the November 14, 2007 Endnote workshop:

http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/library.html?event_ID=4469&dat=2007-11-14

Tag instruction workshops so they all come up with a single search
When submitting an event, just expand the "Keywords" section of the submission form and add a distinctive keyword. It will not display to the public but can be used in searches.

For example, the keyword "instruction" was added to a few records. Try that word in the event search box and any that are still in the future will come up.

However, there is a quirk at the searching end of this process. The search box on the calendar page covers all fields and defaults to OR, so for example, if you search on "library instruction" you'll get a lot of irrelevant hits. Using the Advanced search, you can narrow the search to only keywords, but it still defaults to OR.

Bottom line: Single-word tags work best. "Instruction" and "tours" seem like reasonable tags to use, respectively. To create more access points, science libraries could add "CSEIL", the Teaching Library could add "KYL", etc.

Create a "canned" keyword search, and use it as a link
Create a "canned" search by constructing a URL like this, inserting your search term at the end. The URL can be used in links from web pages. Here's a link to all events tagged as "instruction":

http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/library.html?view=results&OtherKeyword=instruction

Note that this includes both past and future events. You can specify only future events by editing the URL to include "&timeframe=future":

http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/library.html?view=results&time frame=future&OtherKeyword=instruction

Link to events in a single library
There are two ways to do this. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

(1) Use the Advanced Search, select the location you want, and copy the resulting URL. This gets all future events taking place at that location, but does not get other events associated with it (for example, an FSM program that takes place in Zellerbach).

(2) Take advantage of the special "Secondary Event Type" tags. This will get all future events that we've tagged for that location (including events elsewhere, but associated with it).

To do this, modify the URL below with the numeric "EventType" code for the library you want. Here are the codes:

   Bancroft Library 784
   Doe Library 791
   Environmental Design Library 786
   Free Speech Movement Cafe 787
Inst of Governmental Studies Library 802
   Moffitt Library 792
   Morrison Library 789
   Water Resources Center Archives 796

For example, here are future events tagged for Doe Library.

http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/library?view=results &timeframe=future&EventType=791

Caveat: this will only get results if the location has future events and if the calendar editor has tagged them with the appropriate Secondary Event Type.

Anyone interested in doing this, and whose library will be submitting events, please contact John Kupersmith for information.
