Can you tell Jonathan is having fun? Always!
Jonathan Richman does not like computers. But here's one page with a bunch of links to some people who do like computers with some document telling of Jonathan's individualistic music and spirit, which are why he is one of our very favorite performers on the planet!

If we did not truly love the music and energy of Jane Siberry, we certainly would not have invited her to perform in our home in 1999. It was a one of a kind experience, and we recommend listening to her music and supporting her efforts at www.sheeba.ca as much as possible.

Ozomatli travel the world with their own energy and spirit that are second to none. Besides that, they make Candice wanna dance all night.

Linda Tillery and The Cultural Heritage Choir invoke some of the strongest emotional responses to music I have ever known. If you are not familiar with the African-American spirituals/"survival music" they sing, and the spirit with which they do it, find out!

Billy Bragg is that rare English singer/songwriter who sings like he talks, with a thick 'ol accent, and we love him for that but we love hime even more for his passion for unions, the environment, and justice.

Bob Brozman can apparently play anything with strings from any country in the world--we especially like his duets with Hawiian and Okinawan musicians!

Jeff Buckley's life has passed, but his voice does not fade away. If you are unfamiliar with his work or know only his father's voice, check out Jeff Buckley.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds write about murder so much even the most tender of their love songs seem to have a death in there somewhere, but we love them so.

Ani Difranco is an individualistic performer who makes us excited, whether she is all alone on stage or with a big band, she helps us understand and cope with this world of ours.

Great Big Sea hail from New Foundland and we love their blend of pop and traditional Gaelic music. It's hard not to enjoy their energy in performance. They are back in SF on August 13th!

Robyn performing a special tour/concert at sea
Robyn Hitchcock is as wordy as they get, an "organic" songwriter as he prefers to be called. Jonathan Demme liked him enough to to make a movie called Storefront Hitchcock, and we do too.

Eight-String bass/guitar (3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings) virtuoso Charlie Hunter is truly one of a kind. If you like Jazz, and more specifically guitar Jazz, check him out. You'll swear that there are two people playing a guitar and a bass. (Jon Fuezy)

The Indigo Girls are still harmonizing their way to our hearts and minds whenever we try them on for size.

We love flowers too!
James' lead singer Tim Booth just retired from the group last December after quite an oddyssey, but they have left behind plenty of sounds for us to ponder.

Norah Jones crosses musical borders from jazz to soul to folk-based pop. Jones' honey and smoke voice along with her skill as a storyteller and piano player urges listeners to hear original and classic songs, as if for the first time. Also, she is Sitar guru Ravi Shankar's daughter!! (Jon Fuezy)

The Kinks bruddas are divided at the moment, but fortunately Ray and Dave are still each performing our very favorite mantra of a song, I'm Not Like Everybody Else (our most favorite version actually by The Wolfhounds).

Los Super Seven blend a mixture of Latin sounds. Check them out--you won't regret it.

Laura Love is a woman who nows how to play a red bass guitar, and she has plenty of spirit to go with that knowledge.

CAF Commentary on why
The Dave Matthews Band
is NOT on this list!

Shane MacGowan is a couple teeth shy of dentures, but he's got an Irish passion for music that we can't resist, whether playing with the Pogues, the Popes, or anyone.

Poi Dog Pondering have gone through many incarnations since their early days in Hawaii and then Austin, but Frank Orrall's heart remains full of love, and thus always worth listening out for.

Keali'i Reichel is an incredible Hawaiian chanter and a beautiful singer as well. His commitment to preserving and fighting for Hawaiian culture is also an inspiration to us.

The Saw Doctors are a splendid Irish band with plenty of traditional sounds to enjoy. They have been making it to the Bay Area increasingly often!

Jake Shimabukuro can play the ukelele with such speed and skill that we simply cannot comprehend it--oh and he always looks like he's having a blast doing it! Look for his albums with Pure Heart and his first solo album this August!!

Spearhead with Michael Franti are a Bay Area group with a strong political and moral conscience who are doing important work worthy of all of our ears.

Tom Waits has the voice, the innovation, and the energy to make us devour every album and wait patient for the sporadic concert.

Dar Williams sings because she cares, and she takes stands where they need to be taken and delves creatively into the muddiness of everything else.

Glenn Yarbrough: My dad loved him and that's a factor, but the one of a kind smoothness of his voice is the proof.
