You can access UCB Library resources from off campus or via your laptop or other mobile device using one of two simple methods:

Proxy Server
After you make a one-time change in your web browser settings, the proxy server will ask you to log in with a CalNet ID or Library PIN when you click on the link to a licensed resource. See the setup instructions, FAQ, and Troubleshooting pages to configure your browser.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)
After you install and run the VPN "client" software on your computer, you can log in with a CalNet ID to establish a secure connection with the campus network.

Electronic Resource Finder

The most important research section of the library web site is the Library Electronic Resource Finder. This is the library directory of databases and other information resources, organized by subject (e.g. political science) type (e.g. encyclopedias) as well as other categories. The UCB libraries have purchased several packages of ebooks from commercial vendors and university presses. Ebooks may be located by searching in Oskicat and/or Melvyl but there may be delays loading ebook records into these catalogs. You may therfore wish to browse or search the following ebook packages, which many contain ebooks in economics and finance.

ebrary. Our largest e-book collection, with over 50,000 titles on a wide range of subjects. Find them in OskiCat (keyword: ebrary) or search the ebrary website directly. Some advanced ebrary features require downloading reader software.

Goldsmith's-Kress Library of Economic Literature. Collection of e-books from 1460-1850, and 466 pre-1906 serials. Focuses on economics and includes collections on banking, finance, and manufacturing. Combines the Goldsmiths' Library of Economic Literature at the University of London, and the Kress Library of Business and Economics at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, along with materials from the Seligman Collection at Columbia University and libraries at Yale.

National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) The National Bureua of Economic Research (NBER) is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. Research is conducted by more than 600 university professors around the country, the leading scholars in their fields. This database includes historical ebooks dating from the 1990s, but most current ebooks are not available.

OECD iLibrary. Full-text publications and data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), including country studies, forecasting publications, reports, socioeconomic datasets, and an interactive Health data database. The statistics sections include data in international trade, telecommunications, foreign aid, migration, and many other categories. From 1983 to the present.

Oxford Scholarship Online. Cross-searchable library containing the full text of books in many subjects, including politcs, economics and finance from 2008 to present.

Palgrave Connect: Economics and Finance Collections. Contains Palgrave ebooks in economics and finance as well as business and management from 2006 to present. Palgrave is one of the premier commercial book publishers in economics.

Springer Electronic Book Package. Thousands of e-books the commerical publisher Springer. in several of the social sciences, including Business and Economics as well as Mathematics and Statistics and more. These e-books are also listed in Melvyl.

UC Press E-Books Collection (eScholarship Editions). Online titles from the University of California Press - about 30% of the UC Press books, both in print and out-of-print are represented in this collection. Click on By Subject, for a title list by subject. Titles are viewable online but cannot be downloaded. Date coverage is from 1999 - 2004.

Wiley Online Library Ebook Collection. Books from 2011 to present, including books in politics and economics. Like Springer (see above) this ebook portal also offers access to Wiley electronic journals.

World Bank e-Library. Full-text World Bank publications from mid 1990's to present. Topics covered include: economics and finance, public policy, education, international development, technology, poverty, gender, and more.

Before you begin your topic it 's a good idea to get a broad overview of your topic by doing background reading. The following sources can help you get started. See also the sections below on e-books and searching the libary catalogs (important).

Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Country Reports and Profiles. Indexes studies that provide analysis and forecasts of the political, economic, and business environments in more than 180 countries. Annual profiles are updated by quarterly reports.

Europa World. Provides political and economic information on over 250 countries and territories, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.

International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (IESBS). The electronic version of the 26 volume IESBS set published in 2001. It contains over 3800 articles spread over 99 subject areas.

Oxford Reference Online - Politics and Social Sciences. Access to nine reference sources published by Oxford University Press on the topic of World History, Geography, Politics and Sociology. Search all sources collectively or search within an individual title.

New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics. Comprehensive encyclopedia of economic thought, containing over 1000 articles by over 1,500 contributors, providing both a current overview of economics as well as classic essays.

Routledge Politics and International Relations Online. Extensive ollection of reference books and encyclopedias from Routledge. Coverage includes globalization, international security, political thought, peace and conflict, political chronologies and more.

Find a book that matches your topic and go to the call number range to browse. Check the references and bibliography.

Google Scholar. Functions as both a key word database for articles and books. It automatically connects to select licensed content held by the UC libraries.

Google Books. Millions of scanned books worldwide. Search the text of the books, view previews or "snippets" from books still in copyright, and read the full text of out-of-copyright books. To read the text of a copyrighted book, use the Find in a Library link to locate the book at UC Berkeley or search OskiCat.

Oskicat. UC Berkeley libraries catalog. Includes records for most UCB library materials, including books, e-books, journal and e-journal titles, films and videos, maps, archival materials, and much more. See also the Quick Guide to Oskicat and Oskicat Tutorial.

Melvyl. Catalog for all UC Campus libraries, including selected libraries on campus not in Oskicat, e.g. the Boalt Law Library.

Citation Management Tools

Citation management tools help you manage your research, collect and cite sources, and create bibliographies in a variety of citation styles. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses, but any are easier than doing it by hand!

Zotero: A free plug-in that works exclusively with the Firefox browser: keeps copies of what you find on the web, permits tagging, notation, full text searching of your library of resources, works with Word, and has a free web backup service.
RefWorks - free for UC Berkeley users. It allows you to create your own database by importing references and using them for footnotes and bibliographies. Use the RefWorks New User Form to sign up.
EndNote: may be purchased from UC Berkeley's Software Central.

It's always good to double check the formatting -- sometimes the software doesn't get it quite right.

Political Economy Databases

America: History and Life. Indexes over 2,000 journals published worldwide on the history of the US and Canada from prehistory to the present. Includes all key English-language historical journals; selected historical journals from major countries, state, and local history journals; and a targeted selection of hundreds of journals in the social sciences and humanities.

CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online). Indexes journals, books, policy briefs, working papers, and conference proceedings from research institutes worldwide related to international affairs analysis and advocacy materials. Also includes links to international affairs Internet sources.

EconLit. The most comprehensive index to scholarly journal articles in economics. It also lists books and dissertations, and indexes articles within 'collective works' (books consisting of collections of essays or individual papers). Most citations include a searchable abstract.

Historical Abstracts. Indexes over 2,000 journals, as well as historical book reviews and dissertations, published worldwide about all aspects of world history (excluding US and Canada) from 1450 to the present. Articles covered were written from 1954 to the present

IDEAS: Economics and Finance Research . A free bibliographic database on economics. Offering citations to thousands of full-text working papers, books and book chapters, and articles from peer-reviewed journals.

JSTOR. Includes over 1000 scholarly journals with access to more than 2 million articles. JSTOR is an archive which means that current issues (generally the most recent 3-5 years) of the journals are not yet available.

PAIS International and PAIS Archive. Indexes books, journals, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, and web sources related to public policy, politics, economics, and social issues worldwide. Includes publications from over 120 countries. Some of the indexed materials are published in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Archive covers English-language material only. (Search all CSA/Illumina Social Sciences databases.)

PolicyFile. Index to public policy in the areas of economics, politics, the environment, and social issues, taken from reports from a wide range of thinks tanks, Non-governmental organizations, international governmental organizations, and other institutions worldwide.

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts. Indexes books, journals, and dissertations within the field of political science and related to international relations, law and politics, political economy, public administration, and public policy. (Search all CSA/Illumina Social Sciences databases.)

Data Lab

The Data Lab, located in Doe Annex 189 (floor plan), provides access to a growing collection of electronic data files and analytical software such as MS Excel, SAS, SPSS, Stata, and DataFerret. Data Lab staff can help you locate, retrieve, and use computer-readable, numeric data. Check their hours page for more information.

The Data Lab has also created a Google Custom Search that targets 800+ academic, government agency, non-profit, and other web sites that provide high quality, downloadable statistical information and data sets. Emphasis is on data pertaining to the social sciences, health, developing countries, energy, natural resources, and the environment.

Statistics & Data in Political Economy

American Factfinder (U.S. Census Bureau). Interactive database used to find population, housing, industry and business statistics from the U.S. Census.. Allows users to compile census data into tables, maps and downloadable files, which can be viewed or printed.

CEIC Global. Database of over 400,000 time series covering a growing list of countries in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Data items include: National Accounts, Industrial, Sales, Construction-Property, Demographic-Labor, Domestic and Foreign Trade, Stock Markets, Banking, Inflation, Monetary, Forex, Investment, and more.

CQ Voting and Elections Collection. Documents and data, authoritative analyses, background information and definitions, chronology, and historical material related to specific elections and the electoral process in America. A data set of voting/election statistics is available for downloading. Part of the CQ Electronic Library collection.

Field Poll. An independent, non-partisan, media-sponsored public opinion news service. Each year the poll covers a wide range of political and social topics examining California public opinion.

Gallup Brain. Provides over 60 years of public opinion poll data from the Gallup Organization. It also offers the latest poll analyses, news stories and press releases linked to the surveys.

Global Financial Data (GFD). Contains long runs of historical data (over 6,000 series) and macroeconomic trends for over 150 countries: financials, interest rates, exchange rates and more. Includes online encyclopedias that describe each dataset.

International Financial Statistics (IFS). From the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Includes data on exchange and interest rates, balance of payments, government finance, national accounts, prices, foreign reserves, and more. Use the concept view under query builder.

Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Consortium of institutions working to acquire and preserve social science data. Maintained at University of Michigan, ICPSR receives, processes, and distributes data on social phenomena in 130 countries. Includes survey data, census records, election returns, economic data, and legislative records.

OECD iLibrary. Publications and statistical data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), including country studies, reports, and datasets. Statistics includes data for international trade, telecommunications, foreign aid, migration, and other categories.

Proquest Statistical Datasets. Access to data points from local, state and international governments and organizations. Allows for customization of the data by selecting subjects, variable of interest, and the ability to view your data in side-by-side tables, charts and maps.

Proquest Statistical Insight. Provides access to indexing and statistical tables from three key sources: American Statistics Index (ASI; 1973-present), Statistics Reference Index (SRI; 1980-present), and Index to International Statistics (IIS; 1983-present). The American Statistics Index links to many full text documents published 1994-present.

PRS Group Country Data. Political risk data for 140 countrie from 1980, as well as macroeconomic data and Political Risk Services (PRS) forecasting on bureaucracy, corruption, civil disorders, ethnic tensions, poverty, inflation, terrorism, and other metrics. Political risk forecasting includes ratings on debt, investment risk, exchange controls, tariff barriers, trade restrictions, domestic economic problems etc.

RAND California. Statistics on business & economics; population and demographics; education; community; health & socioeconomic; government finance; census; politics & public opinion. Also includes an online index to RAND public policy and research publications.

Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. Domestic and international survey data. The Center's Public Opinion Location Library (iPOLL) gives online access to a database including poll questions asked in US from 1936 to present.

Statistical Abstract of the United States. From the U.S. Census Bureau. Contains a collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States as well as selected international data. 1878 - present.

VoteWorld. From the UC Berkeley Institute for Governmental Studies, London School of Economics, and the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Includes data from the European Parliament and US Congress. Please make an appointment in the library data lab if you need assistance.

Votes in the UN General Assembly. UN General Assembly votes from 1946-2005, from Eric Voeten, George Washington University. Please make an appointment in the library data lab for assistance if needed for this.

World Development Indicators. From the World Bank. Time series data from 1960 for 207 countries in the areas of population, labour, education, economics, the environment and much more.

Economic Data Visualization

Datamasher. Mashups of government data about states. Helps citizens see how states compare on important issues. Users can combine different data sets in interesting ways and create custom rankings by state.

Census CD neighborhood change database. (Geolytics). Contains nation-wide tract-level data from the 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000 decennial censuses. Combines U.S. Bureau of the Census data into one product with variables and tract boundaries consistently defined across census years.

Gapminder. Non-profit venture promoting sustainable global development and achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Access and cross-tabulate 200 statistical time series. See espcially Gapminder World and this video from co-founder Hans Rosling's 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes.

Google Public Data Explorer. Makes large datasets easy to explore, visualize and communicate. Includes visualizations for data from the World Bank, OECD, Eurostat, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and more.

Many Eyes. Enables users to upload data for visualization and employ tools to generate interactive displays. Includes thousands of user-generated and public domain data visualizations (not all of which are reliable). From IBM.

National Historical Geographic Information System, Contains aggregare U.S. census data and GIS boundary files for each census from 1790 to 2000.

OECD Factbook eXplorer. interactive tool for analysing the OECD country statistical
profiles for a variety of major economic, social and environmental indicators.

SimplyMap. Requires user registration. Enables non-technical users to quickly create professional quality thematic maps and reports using extensive demographic, business and other data.

Social Explorer. Current and historical census data and other demographic information, such as religious organizations. Web interface lets users create maps and reports to illustrate, analyze and demographic and social change

US Government Information

ProQuest Congressional. One stop shopping for U.S. congressional publications. Provides index and abstracts of congressional publications back to 1789, including full text Congressional Hearings from 1824-present, full text Committee Prints from 1830-present, full text Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports from 1916-present, full text United States Congressional Serial Set from 1789-1969, and legislative histories from 1970-present. American Presidency Project. Contains all major publications of the U.S. Office of the President, including: Public Papers of the President, Inaugural Addresses, Executive Orders, Signing Statements, and other information such as radio addresses, party platforms, videos of debates, and popularity polling data. This project was developed by two political science professors at UCSB.

Catalog of US Government Publications. Indexes government documents printed by the US Government Printing Office since July 1976; documents include Congressional committee hearings, congressional debates and records, judiciary material, documents issued by departments such as Defense, State, Labor, and the Office of the President. Also includes links to Federal agency online resources.

CQ Electronic Library. A reference source on American politics and government that includes the following modules: CQ Congress Collection, CQ Political Handbook of the World, CQ Researcher Plus Archive, CQ Supreme Court, CQ Voting and Elections, CQ Washington Information Directory, CQ Weekly. Access individual modules or search across all CQ collections.

CQ Voting and Elections Collection. Offers documents and data, authoritative analyses, background information and definitions, chronology, and historical material related to specific elections (Congressional,presidential, and gubernatorial) and the electoral process in America. A data set of voting/election statistics is available for exporting/downloading. Part of the CQ Electronic Library collection.

CQ MoneyLine. Provides tracking of the flow of money in politics at the federal level with some state information from 1980 to the present. Enables tracking of contributions from Political Action Committees (PACs), individual donors to politicians, elected officials, and party committees; follow soft money through 527 groups, and retrieve information on thousands of lobbyists, indexed by client and issue.

DDRS (Declassified Documents Reference System). Over 75,000 documents and almost 500,000 pages of materials declassified via the Freedom of Information Act and regular declassification requests, making broad-based and highly targeted investigation of government documents possible. Nearly every major foreign and domestic event of these years is covered.

Metavid. A searchable archive of video from the United States House and Senate Floor Debates captured though C-SPAN, from 2006 to the present. Can be searched by topic/subject keyword or person. Video can also be freely downloaded by anyone.

Oyez Project. A multimedia archive devoted to the Supreme Court of the United States and its work. Contains all audio recorded in the Court since the installation of a recording system in October 1955, and summaries of major cases going back to the courts founding. The Project also provides biographical information on all justices and offers a virtual reality 'tour' of portions of the Supreme Court building, including the chambers of some of the justices.

The amount of information on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on the Internet is large so locating NGO information by subject or geography can be difficult. The following links and the NGO search engine below may help.

NGO Custom Search Engine

This search engine was developed by David Oldenkamp at Indiana University and James Jacobs at Stanford. The site seaches NGOs with Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and other NGO directories on the Internet.

Directory of Development Organizations. Over 47,000 organizations of all kinds listed by region and country. One of the most extensive compilation of NGO country directories.

Idealist.Org. Includes a searchable directory of over 52,000 organizations by name, mission, country of focus, and more.

Non-Governmental Organizations Research Guide (Duke University). Guide enabling users to browse NGOs by issue, region, and affiliation.

TakingITGlobal. International non-profit organization centered on young people interested in connecting across cultures. Outstanding source of NGO information by country and area of focus. Go to browse organizations.

Foreign Broadcast Information Service

The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) can provide you a wealth of information from foreign news sources. The U.S. State Department ran the FBIS to translate foreign language newspapers, wires, and broadcasts into English. FBIS only translated information relating to U.S. interests, and only distributed to the public a select amount of what was translated.

Access World News. Provides full-text information and perspectives from over 600 U.S. and over 700 international sources. Offers strong regional coverage for California newspapers.

CQ Weekly. Provides nonpartisan information about US government and congressional affairs and subjects of concern. This online version also provides access to some articles prior to when they appear in the print version of CQ Weekly. Part of the CQ Electronic Library collection

The Economist. General interest news source about current trends in business, politics and economics worldwide. Locations for print magazine can be found via this record in Oskicat. For historical issues see the Economist Historical Archive which provides the full text of each issue of the Economist from 1843- 2003.

Financial Times. Access to the Financial Times from January 1998 to present. For historical access see the Financial Times Historical Archive which has the complete run of the daily Financial Times from the first issue in 1888 through 2006.

Lexis-Nexis Academic. Full-text source for business, current affairs, legal information, medical information and news with online access to over 70 million articles appearing in newspapers, journals, newsletters, broadcast transcripts, reference works and other documents.

Nation Digital Archive. Full text access to The Nation, a weekly news magazine covering U.S. politics and society since 1865.

National Journal Group's Policy Central. Indexes National Journal, The Hotline which tracks American politics and campaigns with coverage of each day's events, Congress Daily, Technology Daily, Almanac of American Politics, Poll Track and others to provide a comprehensive resource on politics and policy.

New York Times. Full-text coverage of the New York Times from June 1980 to present.. For Historical issues see Historical Newspapers (ProQuest).

Project Syndicate. Excellent collection of op-ed commentaries from some of the world's leading economists and opinions makers. Includes columnes from Jagdish Bhagwati, Brad DeLong Barry Eichengreen, Kenneth Rogof, Nouriel Roubini, Joseph E. Stiglitz, Martin Feldstein, Dani Rodrik, and Jeffrey Sachs.
