Indexes

Modern Language Association International Bibliography (MLAIB) (UCB only) The MLAIB is the largest index of critical scholarship on literature, language, linguistics, and folklore, containing over 2 million citations. The online version starts with the 1926 annual bibliography, but coverage of JSTOR titles goes back to the first issue published. Important to remember that, until 1956, the bibliography concentrated on scholarship by those living in the U. S. Coverage expanded in 1956 with the addition of the word “international” to the title of the bibliography. Also important to know: subject indexing expanded dramatically in 1981; entries before that time usually have only the subject author’s name, national literature and century as descriptors. Users must consult catalogs to ensure finding monographs or collections of essays. The MLAIB does not include book reviews unless the review itself constitutes a scholarly article. See “Searching the MLA International Bibliography” for effective ways to search.

Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) (UCB only) Published by the Modern Humanities Research Association, ABELL indexes materials about works originally written in English. Should be searched in conjunction with the MLAIB since the two indexes have only about 60-70% overlap in coverage. ABELL began in 1921 and does include book reviews of scholarly books.

Academic Search Complete (UCB only) A multidisciplinary index to articles in thousands of journals with full-text for many. Good place to find recent scholarly articles and to begin research on interdisciplinary topics.

Essay and General Literature Index and Essay and General Literature Index Retrospective (UCB only) Indexes selected collections of essays starting in 1900. Especially helpful since the MLAIB did not begin systematic coverage of such monographs until fairly recently.

International Medieval Bibliography (IMB) (UCB only) Covers all aspects of the middle ages (400-1500 A.D.) in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

ITER: Gateway to the Renaissance (UCB only) An index of articles, essays, books and reviews related to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (400-1700). 1883- Includes Iter Bibliography, a database of over a million scholarly articles,

World Shakespeare Bibliography Online (UCB only) Indexes a variety of scholarship related to Shakespeare, his works, his times and productions of his work.
